The therapists who make up DOT Center’s team come from incredibly diverse backgrounds and experiences, as do the clients we serve. This month we spotlight our skillful & intuitive expressive arts therapist, Zena Carlota, AMFT! Zena has a passion for healing, the arts, spirituality and social justice. She is an artist, storyteller and musician inspired by folk medicine, Afro-Indigenous healing arts practices, earth-based wisdom traditions and psychodynamic theory. As a therapist, Zena integrates ancestral healing arts, spiritual practice and somatic awareness into her work with clients. She enjoys working with women and femme-identified people, first generation, immigrant and refugee communities, s*x positive and polyamorous relationships, BIPOC, LGBTQ+ and creatives. Zena has current telehealth openings for individuals & couples and looks forward to connecting with new clients.
“Together we will explore the unconscious lands of your feelings and choices, examine the invisible patterns that have influenced your life, while using the creative tools of imagery, dreamwork, ritual, somatics, symbolism and storytelling to cultivate connection, self awareness and empowerment, choose your next steps with clarity and live your life with freedom.” ~Zena Carlota, AMFT

We live in a world where we are constantly navigating stressors that cause us to feel anxiety, vigilance, panic, aggression, depression, collapse...the list goes on. While these are completely normal emotional and physiological stress responses, they wear on our nervous systems and bump us out of connection to ourselves and our relationships. We must therefore establish practices that are effective in restoring the nervous system to a state of connection where we feel safer, calmer and generally comfortable. What practices return you to a state of connection and how do you know (feel) that you've arrived?

For many South Asian women, breaking free from social norms and living our best life may feel unrealistic when we have been taught to live for others. Fulfilling cultural and familial expectations, beliefs, and dreams can be a beautiful path…and it has some drawbacks. One big drawback is feeling unseen and looking for validation all the time. What are some ways you try to break free from this cycle?

We'd like to introduce DOT Center's new trusted & compassionate therapist, Laya Jamali, AMFT! Laya brings with her a background in relational depth-oriented psychotherapy, neurobiology, and psychedelic assisted psychotherapy. She is committed to bringing high quality psychotherapy to underrepresented communities including LGBTQI+ and BIPOC individuals & couples. Above all else, Laya listens for and honors the inner healing wisdom of clients and holds a deep respect for one's life narrative and the social-cultural influences that shape who they are. She's looking forward to supporting individuals & couples virtually and in-person at our downtown Oakland offices. ☀️🌇

“The human brain and behavior have always been a source of fascination for me since childhood. My curiosity about why we do what we do along with my interest in personal narratives, lived experiences and the concept of inner healer, has inspired me to pursue the work of being a therapist to deepen my understanding of human experience. I believe in the importance of following my clients’ inner healing wisdom and value having a beginner’s mind.”
~Laya Jamali, AMFT
