Seneca Family of Agencies

Seneca Family of Agencies Our mission is to provide Unconditional Care to children & families through the most challenging times of their lives.

For more than four decades, Seneca has offered a simple promise to each youth and every family we serve: No matter how profound the difficulties you face, we will be with you every step of the way. Today, Seneca provides a broad range of mental health, education, foster care, and juvenile justice services that impact over 25,000 young people and their families every year. We are driven by the fundamental belief that children and families do not fail, but rather are failed by systems unable to meet their complex needs. We operate with the promise to meet children and families where they are, supporting and caring for them at every stage of their journey, and fostering positive outcomes for a healthier future.

When emotions run high, a simple pause can make all the difference 😮‍💨

One of the grounding techniques we use with youth is called mindful stopping. It's a practical, easy-to-use strategy that helps you slow down, regulate emotions & make more intentional choices. Joann Aspiras, Lead Counselor in Seneca’s STEP Program, walks through this simple yet powerful skill we teach youth every day.

STOP stands for:
🛑 Stop – Pause what you’re doing
🌬️ Take a breath – Calm your nervous system
👀 Observe – Notice your thoughts, feelings & needs
➡️ Proceed mindfully – Choose your next step with intention

Save this for later or share it with someone who could use a reminder to pause today. 💙

April is 😵‍💫

Stress is something we all experience, but when it becomes a constant it can have a serious impact on both mental & physical health. For many of the youth & families we serve—& for those doing this work alongside them—stress can happen often. It can be layered, ongoing & connected to our environment or life circumstances. That’s why taking intentional moments to care for ourselves is so important.

While we may not always be able to remove stress entirely, we can build small, consistent ways to manage it & support our well-being. Send this to someone who could use a reminder today! 💬

Meet Alex* 💙

At 13 years old, Alex had already experienced multiple placements & even had suicidal thoughts. They were struggling—feeling unsafe & disconnected—& would sometimes shout or throw things.

But when they entered Seneca’s emergency placement program, that started to change. They started therapy to process significant early childhood trauma & explore their gender identity. Our Family Finding team was also able to track down Alex’s grandmother, who wanted to reconnect. This is what it means to provide .

Because of your generosity, Alex is now rebuilding a sense of safety, identity & belonging. to everyone who has already donated to our Open the Door to Hope campaign. If you haven’t yet, there is still time to help create more stories like Alex’s. 🌱

Each year, students from James Baldwin Academy embark on an overnight cabin trip! For some of our students, this may be their first time visiting the mountains—so we make sure they’re fully prepared, at no cost to them. The school provides clothing & equipment when needed, ensuring every student has the opportunity to participate. ❄️💙

Experiences like this cabin trip create an opportunity for students to build trust, strengthen peer relationships, try new things & simply experience joy. For students who may have faced instability or barriers, these moments can be powerful in helping them reconnect to school & their community. 🌱

Our Story

Seneca Family of Agencies was founded in 1985 by advocates who wanted to better meet the needs of children in group homes and foster family care. Seneca established itself as an innovative leader in the provision of unconditional care through a comprehensive continuum of school, community-based and family-focused treatment services for children and families experiencing high levels of trauma who are at risk for family disruption or institutional care for the children. In 2011, a strategic merger with Kinship Center formed Seneca Family of Agencies. In 2012, Canyon Acres Ranch was incorporated into the Orange County programs of Kinship Center, expanding the local base of mental health, wraparound, child placement, family finding and professional and parent training services. Kinship Center, founded in 1984, specializes in adoption, foster care, family-based services, child and family mental health care, along with parent and professional post graduate training. The merger into Seneca Family of Agencies expands Kinship Center's landmark work in California of creating, supporting, educating and providing mental health services to families built by adoption and relative caregiving. Canyon Acres has a 31-year history of serving children and families throughout Southern California, providing the highest level of care and therapeutic treatment to children who suffer from a variety of emotional and psychological disorders. The Canyon Acres Ranch Children’s Treatment Center in Orange County features a variety of therapeutic care programs that include child placement, mental health services and animal assisted therapy through an equine riding program. The joining of these organizations creates one of the most comprehensive service systems for children in California. Seneca Family of Agencies’ continuum of care now includes: in-home wraparound; foster family-based treatment; adoption and foster care; mobile crisis response; kinship care; integrated day treatment and special education services; after-school therapeutic recreation programming; public school-based mental health services; therapeutic mental health services -including pet assisted psychotherapy; intensive and preventive treatment for at-risk children and families; family finding for foster children; and nurturing residential treatment.
