For my fellow therapists (and the people that love them):
Why we therapists are so tired, especially if you are new to working online.
(Note: Everyone is tired.)
1. It's ANOTHER added change to our daily (hourly?) shifting world that we have to keep adjusting to.
2. With our nervous systems cranked up to 11 (uh, survival, ya know?), human's ability to concentrate is lowered, our IQ drops, and our ability to learn is impeded.
3) if you're new to working online, this is a big learning curve for many (see #2).
4) It's hard to be at 100% with #1, 2, 3. We're used to being at 100% during our sessions. Right now, nobody can be at 100% as often as we are used to. Our clients are not at 100% either, yet we can still do our work in helping them.
5) With our amygdalas in over-drive, so is self-criticism. Let's give ourselves a break, and comfort our inner critics in the same ways we would for a client or loved one.
6) We don't get a break from being conscious of/processing stuff around COVID 19, because pretty much all of our clients need us to do that with them. If we had different jobs, most of us would have at least a few of our working hours that were distractions from the whole thing; we need distractions.
7) Intuition working online is different than in person. This was the main thing I had to figure out when I started working online 6-8 years ago. We're used to in-the-room intuition/gut reaction/felt sense.
We get some of that online, from visual and verbal cues, but not all of it. However, we also have distance intuition; any of you with kids know this: you get a sense if your kid needs you, if they're ok. Even if you don't have kids, you have likely had times when you knew you needed to call somebody you care about, to see if they were ok, or even just an urge, that you really wanted to call/check up on someone. So, bring that into your online sessions. Maybe just imagine being in the same room with them while you talk; that can help, too.
So, yes; we are all tired. If yo can, find some good distractions when you're not working. (Me, I'm watching "Supernatural" reruns. GO, Sam & Dean!)
And get rest as you can.
