Roots Community Health

Roots Community Health Healing our community from within through integrated health care, support services and empowerment. Roots Community Health is a nonprofit based in East Oakland.

We take an empowerment approach to all of our services and programs. We are committed to supporting each person's "whole health"--addressing not only physical and mental health, but also access to opportunity and freedom from violence. Our Mission

To provide the highest quality comprehensive health care and mental health services to Oakland residents with the goal of eliminating health disparities in our community; to identify the roots of suffering and illness and address them through community-responsive, culturally appropriate service delivery; to focus on providing excellent access to comprehensive care in a safe and dignified environment; to identify and treat not only the symptoms, but also the roots of physical and mental ailments affecting our patients and our community; to establish roots and partnerships within our community to address issues of violence, substance abuse, poor nutrition and limited access to educational and vocational opportunities; and to provide state-of-the-art, top-quality care while honoring the roots of culture, heritage and tradition.

Last week, Kamillah, our Clinical Program Coordinator, explained the high HIV rates that affect Black communities across the country and here in Alameda County for Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.

She also talked about how Roots Community Health is working to lower stigma, increase access to care and treatment, and highlight the importance of prevention and care led by the community.

In honor of Black History Month, we uplift Roots Community Health, a black-led partner grounded in healing and equity. Founded in 2008 in East Oakland, Roots meets people where they are, from re-entry programs to neighborhood hubs, offering health care and wrap-around services that strengthen families and restore dignity.

Their work in San Jose has been vital to residents, and proves that when communities heal from within, equity moves from vision to reality.

In 1992, Nurse Ophelia Long stepped up to a microphone to testify before Congress on healthcare reform and rising costs.

She spoke truth to power, reframing healthcare access not just as a policy issue, but as a moral one.

Decades later, her words still ring with urgent clarity.

Nurse Ophelia understood that the health disparities plaguing Black communities were not accidental byproducts. They were the result of systemic failure—an injustice that she refused to accept quietly.

Roots Community Health was co-founded on her unshakeable belief that healthcare is a right, not a privilege. We continue her work today because we know that true healing cannot happen without equity.

For , we’re spotlighting Black Figures who changed medicine. This week, we honor Nurse Ophelia Long.

Nurse Ophelia Long was a visionary nurse, leader, and advocate who reshaped what community-centered health care can look like.

In 2008, Ophelia Long co-founded Roots Community Health alongside our fearless leader Dr. Noha Aboelata.

Roots began as a two-person volunteer mobile operation, providing care directly to Oakland’s most marginalized residents.

Nurse Ophelia believed in the vision of Roots deeply. She was a fierce advocate for the people, a mentor to generations, and a leader whose influence is woven into the fabric of the organization.

We honor Nurse Ophelia Long by continuing the work she started, uplifting communities impacted by systemic inequities through navigation, empowerment, and care.

Last Saturday was National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, a time to reflect on the realities of HIV in Black communities and uplift prevention, treatment, and community-led care.

At Roots Community Health, we provide monthly HIV and Hep C testing, education, and outreach to reduce stigma and expand access to care.

We also spotlight our partners WORLD:Women Organized to Respond to Life-Threatening Diseases, who support women living with HIV through whole-woman care, including support groups, art therapy, financial literacy, and resource navigation.

This is community care: connected, compassionate, and rooted in equity. ❤️
