and I are offering this special community experience in Portland, OR. We’ll be sharing food demos, ancestral food presentations and opportunities for BIPOC folks to learn in community. We’ll be making two kinds of vegetarian sopes (Papas y Zucchini con Mole, and Bell Pepper y Frijoles con Salsa Verde). Topped with Salsa Esquites (a unique twist on a popular dish). Also we’ll demo Agua de Jamaica (Hibiscus Tea) and Tea de Canela. And finally our amazing superfood Amaranth cookies. 7 dishes that emphasize 7 ancestral foods. We’ll be sharing more than 15 decolonized foods recipes. Sopes are a super nutritious way to eat a variety of ancestral foods. For those not familiar, they have a base of a thick tortia and then beans on top, and veggies layered on top, with a salsa drizzled on top. They are native to central Mexico. Shout out to our dad’s side of the family in Colima, MX 🙌🏾 If you’d like to join us virtually you can DM me directly for questions or to sign up. We’re asking $10-$25 sliding scale (with a few scholarships available). Try to register ahead of time in order to receive the shopping list and familiarize yourself with the recipes before the big night. Much appreciation to Alder Commons for hosting us in their beautiful kitchen. We’re excited to share what we know, and learn from community and for BIPOC folks to learn about

Y, de paso reconociendo también a la vainilla, otra joya gastronómica.

Two exciting indigenous food events coming up! The first happening today (2-4pm), The MesoAmerican Book Readings happening in LA. Which they decided to make virtual. It's at 2pm and the zoom link is in the attached photos. Or you can look up Suzy Tonalmetl Zepeda on Facebook.

The other is the Nightlife with Cafe Ohlone at the California Academy of Sciences. Several people have told me how expensive it can be to sample their food, well here's your chance! I think it's $21 on 2/2 6pm. I am so sad, I'll be back in Oregon by then and am missing it. But if you’re in the Bay, please go for me. The info is attached. I'm sure it'll sell out.

Happy to share that has opened their doors for a new round this year. They will be offering a newly adapted program to a select group of aspiring students. The program will be a hybrid mix of convenient virtual weekday evening class on Thursdays, and in-person rich opportunities at onsite East Bay gardens. They’ve expanded to include a site out in Brentwood. What’s still the same is that the lead instructor is a super knowledgeable teacher who is rooted in Mayan ceremonial practices. And that they make this program affordable. They strive to meet students where they’re at. But likewise students gotta be dedicated to the program, in terms of time and in learning in a respectful, traditional way. I was lucky enough to attend the program in 2019, a super inspirational experience. If you want to learn to garden or farm in a traditional way, to heal your own cultural roots or just be better prepared for the uncertain future, I recommend checking this program out. Please help us to spread the palabra about this beautiful offering 🙌🏾🌿🍄 Working on creating a Spanish version of this flyer soon

I created this holistic framework for engaging with sacred medicines in an ethical way, especially useful for beginner non-indigenous consumers. Rather than assuming that one has a good relationship to a particular psychedelic, this model encourages one to explore their connections in multiple areas, in a complex manner. Addressing the various prompts (with the Personal, Ancestral, Communal and Ecological spheres) can be a long term project, especially useful for those engaging in several sacred medicines. It challenges the consumer to take a realistic account of their relationship to the psychedelics they use, whether the medicine being considered is something such as to***co, kava kava, cannabis, ayahuasca or another medicine. For some exploring their own families ancestral history to a particular psychedelic can be potentially triggering. Be aware, this can bring up a traumatic and intense history. Go at the pace you need to and take breaks to revisit this self exploration. Seek out professional mental health support on this journey if needed. This model is meant to a beginning point, especially meaningful for those who didn’t grow up in a supportive community offering ethical guidance over years. It offers clear reflections for those looking to decolonize and distance themselves from psychedelic tourism. It asks us to look back seven generations at what our families legacies have been. And to co-create a vision we would like to call in for our own seven generations into the future. It encourages us to seek to defend sacred medicines against exploitative practices. It encourages us to listen to the messages Mother Earth is sending. And acknowledges that psychedelic use is on the rise and encourages that our own practices mirror our spiritual goals with our everyday actions. Feel free to adapt these ideas to your own practices and share this model.
