Licensed/certified complementary practitioners volunteer to provide integrative health treatments to low-income cancer clients. Treatments include acupuncture, herbal medicine, homeopathy, bodywork, guided imagery, movement, and nutritional therapies. These healing modalities have been shown to help the immune system recover from the harsh but necessary and life-saving treatments of Western medicine. Most importantly, these treatments generally are not known or not financially accessible to women who are low-income and uninsured. Our community of over 230 clients, 160 volunteers, and 5 staff includes monolingual, bilingual, differently abled, and women of color. We serve low-income women with any kind of cancer, whether it be breast cancer, cervical cancer, metastatic cancer, ovarian cancer, lung cancer, stomach cancer, colon cancer, etc.

We’re thrilled to spotlight Souad, CMC’s Clinic Operations Manager! With her practiced leadership, tenacity, and compassion, Souad ensures our clinic runs smoothly — always with dignity, grace, and heart. 💜

At Charlotte Maxwell Clinic, this month is deeply personal—over half of our clients are living with breast cancer. We design programs specifically for their needs, ensuring no one walks this path alone.

In September, we were thrilled to welcome 15 new practitioner and program support volunteers to the Charlotte Maxwell Clinic community! They’re already making an impact, seeing clients and supporting our mission this October.

Our newest volunteers bring expertise in acupuncture, meditation, cranial sacral massage, Rosen bodywork, and more. Over the coming months, we’ll be introducing each of these talented individuals so you can get to know them better.

🌿 Honoring Betty Segal’s Legacy 🌿

We celebrate longtime CMC volunteer Betty Segal, whose generosity and compassion shaped the way we care for our community.

✨ Trained in lymphedema care, Betty supported clients with hands-on expertise and taught volunteers and clients how to ease this challenging side effect of cancer treatment.
✨ She helped develop our In Home Comfort Care protocols, ensuring that clients who couldn’t travel still received personalized, compassionate support.
✨ She organized remembrance events that gave our community space to grieve, honor, and heal together.

Even after her passing, Betty’s spirit continues to guide us through her meaningful bequest to CMC. In her honor, we’ve committed in 2025 to train our volunteers in lymphedema care—carrying forward the vision she so deeply believed in.

💚 Thank you, Betty, for leaving a legacy of care that lives on in every client we serve.

The Charlotte Maxwell Clinic is named in honor of Charlotte Maxwell, who died of ovarian cancer in 1988.

Charlotte strongly believed that the integrative cancer care that enhanced the quality of her life in her last months should be accessible to all Bay Area low-income, underserved women with cancer.
