Charlotte Maxwell Clinic

Charlotte Maxwell Clinic Charlotte Maxwell Clinic is a women's health clinic founded in Oakland in 1991, offering free integra

Licensed/certified complementary practitioners volunteer to provide integrative health treatments to low-income cancer clients. Treatments include acupuncture, herbal medicine, homeopathy, bodywork, guided imagery, movement, and nutritional therapies. These healing modalities have been shown to help the immune system recover from the harsh but necessary and life-saving treatments of Western medicine. Most importantly, these treatments generally are not known or not financially accessible to women who are low-income and uninsured. Our community of over 230 clients, 160 volunteers, and 5 staff includes monolingual, bilingual, differently abled, and women of color. We serve low-income women with any kind of cancer, whether it be breast cancer, cervical cancer, metastatic cancer, ovarian cancer, lung cancer, stomach cancer, colon cancer, etc.

🌟 Volunteer Spotlight: Piper Cafferata 🌟

This month, we’re thrilled to celebrate the extraordinary Piper Cafferata — longtime volunteer, tech guru, and cherished member of the Charlotte Maxwell Clinic family. 💜

Piper’s journey with CMC began in 2001, and since officially joining our volunteer team in 2008, she’s given 24 years of unwavering service, heart, and dedication.

✨ From delivering groceries during the height of the pandemic to training new staff, coordinating shifts, reviewing client charts, and picking up farm-fresh produce — Piper truly does it all.

💻 Whether she’s solving tech issues, supporting presentations, or offering clinical insights, Piper’s compassion and commitment shine through in everything she does.

Here’s what keeps her coming back:

“The opportunity to help women in my community brought me to Charlotte Maxwell, and the kindness of the staff, compassion of the volunteers, and our beautiful clients who teach me so much keep me coming back.”

In her own words, Piper is also an adventurer at heart — she loves walking, hiking, rafting, skiing, and cozy winter knitting. 🧶⛷️

Piper, thank you for being a guiding light in our community. We’re so grateful for you. 💐

🌿 Volunteer Spotlight: Patricia Ho 🌿

Since joining Charlotte Maxwell Clinic in January 2024 as a shift coordinator, Patricia Ho has been a steady force of care and creativity. She recently joined our Volunteer Action Committee, helping shape programs that support our clients.

Noticing clients’ curiosity about the weekly produce from Full Belly Farm, Patricia had a simple but powerful idea: offer seasonal, easy-to-follow recipes to accompany the produce—focused on affordability, accessibility, and nutrition.

Thank you, Patricia, for nourishing our community in every sense of the word! 💚

🖤❤️💚 Honoring Juneteenth at Charlotte Maxwell Clinic 💚❤️🖤

Today, we recognize Juneteenth, a powerful reminder of resilience, liberation, and the ongoing fight for racial justice.

At Charlotte Maxwell Clinic, we are committed to health equity and holistic care, especially for low-income women with cancer. We honor the spirit of Juneteenth by standing with Black communities, uplifting voices too often unheard, and working toward a more just, inclusive, and compassionate world.

🕊️ Let us reflect. Let us celebrate. Let us continue the work.

Our Story

The Charlotte Maxwell Clinic is named in honor of Charlotte Maxwell, who died of ovarian cancer in 1988.

Charlotte strongly believed that the integrative cancer care that enhanced the quality of her life in her last months should be accessible to all Bay Area low-income, underserved women with cancer.
