The Teaching Well

The Teaching Well We empower school systems to more effectively support, retain and leverage their teams.

The Teaching Well is a non-profit that was started by teachers for teachers. We believe that the health and well being of educators makes a critical difference in school culture, teacher retention, and the lives of students. We are committed to cultivating healthy, resilient educators by providing a variety of experiential, somatic-based workshops and in person offerings for educators, school sites and districts.

“We need to learn how to pause powerfully with an intentional plan.”

October can feel like Helltober for so many educators. Think about it: the excitement of a new school year fades, workloads pile up, and exhaustion hits hard.

Here’s your gentle reminder: pausing isn’t quitting. It’s creating space to keep going well. 🌿

Four ways to pause powerfully this month:

1️⃣ Name what’s heavy. Before you can rest, acknowledge what’s taking up space, both emotionally or mentally.

2️⃣ Schedule a real break. Even 10 minutes between meetings or 1 weekend day offline counts. Add it to your calendar like any other meeting.

3️⃣ Ground your body. Notice where you’re holding tension. Breathe, stretch, or step outside for fresh air.

4️⃣ Ask for support. Reach out to a colleague, friend, or your school wellness team. You don’t have to hold it all alone!

When we pause with intention, we make room for restoration, clarity, and care for ourselves and our students. 💛 Take a pause this week. You deserve it.

🌿 Facilitator Spotlight: Marc Anthony (he/him)

Marc Anthony is a healer and garden tender, cloaked as an educator. 🌱 His work is deeply rooted in the lessons of his ancestors, cultivators of both land and community who taught him to serve people with reverence, care, and connection.

As a youth and family advocate, Marc Anthony has dedicated his life to creating safe spaces filled with joy and empathy. From mentoring young Black men in middle school to leading radical healing camps, he embodies the belief that when the soil is fertile, the seeds can grow abundantly.

Today, Marc Anthony brings that same wisdom to The Teaching Well, mentoring and coaching educators to nurture their own growth while supporting the next generation. His work reminds us that healing is both personal and collective, and that tending to ourselves helps us tend to our communities. 💛

This season is all about the Power of the Pause! As educators and caregivers, we often give so much of ourselves to others and sometimes forget to refill our own cup. 💛

In our first episode of the season, Lindsey shares her experience taking a micro-sabbatical and what it taught her about recovery and rest. She introduces the “Three Rs” of recovery: Rest, Restoration, and Right-Sizing the Mental Load. These are simple practices we can all use to move toward balance and wellness. 🌿

This episode is an open invitation to pause, breathe, and remember that caring for yourself is part of caring for your community.

🎥 A Mini-Break Reminder Video

✨ Ops specialist Emily Perea reminds us: your productivity is only as good as your pauses.

☀️ That quick touch of the sun on your face, 🌬️ taking that deep breath, 👂 hearing the sounds, and 🌿 even touching some grass beneath your feet — none of it is wasted time.

It’s a recharge for your focus and creativity. 💡

Take that mini-break — your brain and body will thank you later. 💛

🌿 Refilling Our Cups: A Retreat with the Marshall Teacher Residency 🌿

In September, The Teaching Well had the privilege of facilitating a restorative retreat for the incredible residents of the Marshall Teacher Residency program.

Together, we created space to pause, reflect, and reconnect — grounding ourselves in purpose and community amidst the demands of the teaching journey. Through mindfulness, storytelling, creativity, and shared reflection, participants explored what it means to teach from a place of wholeness and sustainability.

We’re deeply inspired by the dedication of these educators who are shaping the future of our classrooms with heart and courage. Thank you, MTR, for inviting us into your community and for committing to collective well-being as an essential part of the teaching profession.

Here’s to educators who rest, reflect, and rise together. 💛

🍂 October is here — and we see you, educators. 🍂

This month is often one of the hardest in education: the back-to-school energy has worn off, routines are heavy, and the holiday break feels far away.

Here are 2 tips to support your well-being this October:

1️⃣ Pause & Breathe – Have you experienced the power of taking 3 deep, extended breaths as a way to reset? Even 5-10 seconds of intentional breathing between classes can reset your nervous system and give you a moment of grounding.

2️⃣ Find Joy Daily – Anchor yourself with one simple joy each day: a walk, a favorite snack, or a quick connection with a colleague. Small joys build resilience.

✨ Remember: You don’t have to do it all. Taking care of yourself IS part of the work.

✨ Back to School Check-In ✨

We’re about two months into the school year… how are you really doing? 🍎✏️

This time of year often brings a mix of excitement, exhaustion, and everything in between. Whether you’re feeling energized, overwhelmed, or somewhere in the middle, you’re not alone.

Take a moment today to pause and check in with yourself:
- What’s one thing that’s been going well?
- What’s one thing you’d like to shift or let go of?
- What’s one way you can give yourself a little more care this week?

At The Teaching Well, we believe reflection and connection are essential to sustaining ourselves in education. 💜

✨ Celebrating 6 Years of Healing ✨

This year marks six powerful years of The Teaching Well’s Racial Healing Affinity Groups — sacred spaces where educators come together to heal, learn, and grow in community.

Over the years, these groups have been a place to process, reflect, craft intentions, and take collective action toward healing racial oppression and disconnection — while nurturing the wellness and wholeness of every participant.

We are deeply grateful for the courage, vulnerability, and wisdom that each member has brought to this work. 💜

Together, we’ve built something that ripples far beyond the circle.

Here’s to 6 years of healing, justice, and collective transformation — and to the many more ahead. 🌱✊🏾

Our Story

The Teaching Well works in partnership with schools to more effectively support, retain, and leverage the brilliance of their educators. Together, we heal adult culture and create thriving school ecosystems by providing tools for healthy dialogue, emotional regulation, and mindful stress resilience.

We believe that transformation of our public school system relies on the millions of adults who lead within it, and that when these adults are healthy, emotionally regulated, and empowered, all children will thrive.

Our programming model consists of a three-year suite of professional development, alongside regular 1:1 mentoring for administrators and teachers focused on well-being and sustainability. In addition, we offer data-driven feedback on teacher retention and strategic consulting on systemic transformation.
