The Teaching Well

The Teaching Well We empower school systems to more effectively support, retain and leverage their teams.

The Teaching Well is a non-profit that was started by teachers for teachers. We believe that the health and well being of educators makes a critical difference in school culture, teacher retention, and the lives of students. We are committed to cultivating healthy, resilient educators by providing a variety of experiential, somatic-based workshops and in person offerings for educators, school sites and districts.

🍂 October is here — and we see you, educators. 🍂

This month is often one of the hardest in education: the back-to-school energy has worn off, routines are heavy, and the holiday break feels far away.

Here are 2 tips to support your well-being this October:

1️⃣ Pause & Breathe – Have you experienced the power of taking 3 deep, extended breaths as a way to reset? Even 5-10 seconds of intentional breathing between classes can reset your nervous system and give you a moment of grounding.

2️⃣ Find Joy Daily – Anchor yourself with one simple joy each day: a walk, a favorite snack, or a quick connection with a colleague. Small joys build resilience.

✨ Remember: You don’t have to do it all. Taking care of yourself IS part of the work.

✨ Back to School Check-In ✨

We’re about two months into the school year… how are you really doing? 🍎✏️

This time of year often brings a mix of excitement, exhaustion, and everything in between. Whether you’re feeling energized, overwhelmed, or somewhere in the middle, you’re not alone.

Take a moment today to pause and check in with yourself:
- What’s one thing that’s been going well?
- What’s one thing you’d like to shift or let go of?
- What’s one way you can give yourself a little more care this week?

At The Teaching Well, we believe reflection and connection are essential to sustaining ourselves in education. 💜

Drop a word, emoji, or thought below 👇—How are you feeling at this point in the year?

✨ Celebrating 6 Years of Healing ✨

This year marks six powerful years of The Teaching Well’s Racial Healing Affinity Groups — sacred spaces where educators come together to heal, learn, and grow in community.

Over the years, these groups have been a place to process, reflect, craft intentions, and take collective action toward healing racial oppression and disconnection — while nurturing the wellness and wholeness of every participant.

We are deeply grateful for the courage, vulnerability, and wisdom that each member has brought to this work. 💜

Together, we’ve built something that ripples far beyond the circle.

Here’s to 6 years of healing, justice, and collective transformation — and to the many more ahead. 🌱✊🏾

✨ On September 13, The Teaching Well and the Black Educator Advocates Network came together to host a wellness retreat designed by and for Black educators.

This intentional space honored the brilliance, resilience, and joy of Black teachers, leaders, and education workers who give so much of themselves to their students and communities.

💛 Throughout the retreat, participants stepped away from daily demands to reconnect with self, spirit, and purpose—leaving replenished, energized, and ready to begin the school year grounded in wholeness.

Workshops and healing circles focused on:
🌙 Reclaiming Rest — rest as resistance and liberation
🌿 Radical Healing Practices — breathwork, movement, and mindfulness rooted in African diasporic traditions
🗣️ Storytelling & Connection — building solidarity and joy through shared experiences
🌱 Reimagining Sustainability — creating wellness strategies to thrive within systems not built for our thriving.

This gathering was more than a retreat—it was a celebration, a healing, and a powerful reminder that Black educators deserve rest, joy, and community.

🌈✨ Today we begin The Teaching Well’s 2nd year of the Q***r Educator Collective!

We are overjoyed to continue creating a space where Q***r and Trans educators can connect, share, heal, and thrive. This collective was born out of a vision for deep care for the Q***r community in education — and it’s been such a gift to witness the power of educators showing up as their full selves.

In a world where Q***r and Trans teachers often hold both the weight of their classrooms and the challenges of navigating systems that don’t always affirm them, this collective offers something different: a space of joy, resilience, and radical belonging.

Here’s to another year of:
✨ Building affirming community
✨ Celebrating our identities and brilliance
✨ Supporting each other through the challenges of teaching
✨ Centering joy and healing as essential practices

We cannot wait to see what this year brings — together, we are stronger. 💜

🌟 It’s School Coordinators Appreciation Week! 🌟

This week, we celebrate and honor the incredible Community School Managers (CSMs) of Oakland Unified School District.

Through our partnership with OUSD, we’ve had the privilege of supporting this team with system-level coaching, workplace wellbeing, and quarterly professional development.

But more than that, we’ve witnessed firsthand the vital impact CSMs have every single day:
✨ They are key to retaining principals, ensuring school leaders feel supported and equipped.
✨ They stand alongside the most marginalized students and families, securing resources and wraparound supports that help young people thrive.
✨ They reflect the rich diversity of Oakland, bringing lived experience and cultural connection to their schools and communities.

This is why our partnership feels so aligned and important—because when we invest in CSMs, we invest in stronger schools, supported leaders, and thriving communities.

💙 To Oakland’s CSMs: thank you for your vision, your leadership, and your deep commitment to students and families. We see you, we celebrate you, and we’re proud to walk alongside you.

🌱 Racial Healing Affinity Groups

The Teaching Well invites you to join our Racial Healing Affinity Groups—facilitated spaces to pause, reflect, and grow together. Here, honest dialogue, deep listening, and embodied practices honor our shared humanity while uplifting our unique lived experiences.

What makes them unique:
✨ Affinity-based care – Gather in identity-based circles to process, release, and replenish.
💬 Courageous conversations – Move past surface talk into practices that build trust, repair, and resilience.
🌍 Collective impact – Personal healing ripples outward to strengthen teams, schools, and communities.
🌀 Sustainable practices – Learn tools you can carry beyond the circle.

These are not workshops—they are living spaces of belonging where healing becomes possible and the seeds of justice are nurtured.

👉 Whether you seek restoration, courage, or community, you’ll leave with practices to sustain yourself and contribute to a more whole and equitable world.

Our Story

The Teaching Well works in partnership with schools to more effectively support, retain, and leverage the brilliance of their educators. Together, we heal adult culture and create thriving school ecosystems by providing tools for healthy dialogue, emotional regulation, and mindful stress resilience.

We believe that transformation of our public school system relies on the millions of adults who lead within it, and that when these adults are healthy, emotionally regulated, and empowered, all children will thrive.

Our programming model consists of a three-year suite of professional development, alongside regular 1:1 mentoring for administrators and teachers focused on well-being and sustainability. In addition, we offer data-driven feedback on teacher retention and strategic consulting on systemic transformation.
