🚨 Did you know that there could be a correlation between worsening asthma symptoms and the menstrual cycle?

🚩 Between 10% and 40% of women have reported experiencing significantly worse asthma symptoms just before and during their period.

🚩 The hormonal fluctuations that women experience during their menstrual cycle is believed to be the reason behind this complex change in symptom severity.

🚩 For example, estrogen and progesterone have been found to drive inflammation in lung cells - whereas, testosterone has the opposite effect.

🚩 Progesterone has also been found to impair the hair-like structures found in the airway that are responsible for the expulsion of mucus and foreign debris. This can make the already existing inflammation even worse.

🚩 What makes this correlation even more confusing, is that the hormones in question are at their lowest concentrations at the times in which these symptoms appear. A lot more research is desperately required in this field to understand these patterns better and find solutions for women who are experiencing this.

Swipe ➡️ for more facts

👉🏽Black women are underrepresented in Healthcare research and have the worst health outcomes. Black women and people are not receiving the same quality of healthcare when compared to White people.

👉🏽This system fueled by implicit racial bias and a lack of equity and standard of care for all is shortening the lives of black people. These disparities are absolutely shocking and we need to work on improving healthcare conditions for all people of color because receiving unbiased and inclusive healthcare is a human right!

PCOS and the Va**nal Microbiome

✨Everyday as more and more research is done concerning the va**nal microbiome we learn key factors that can help us better understand why certain conditions may occur.

✨In a recent study published in the Clinical Endocrinology journal, researchers compared the va**nal microbiomes of women with polycystic o***y syndrome (PCOS) to women without PCOS and found a significant difference in the types of bacteria present in these groups of women.

⭐️First off, what is PCOS?
🔑PCOS or polycystic o***y syndrome is a hormonal disorder that is common in women who are of reproductive age. Symptoms of PCOS include having infrequent or prolonged menstrual periods, excess male hormone levels, and the ovaires may develop many small collections of fluid and fail to regularly release eggs.

🔎Here's what the researchers found:
1️⃣After inspecting the va**nal swabs of the two groups of women the researchers found that women with PCOS had a more diverse va**nal microbiome where the level of the protective bacteria Lactobacillus was lower than in women without PCOS.
2️⃣Women with PCOS were also found to have higher levels of the bacterias called Mycoplasma and Prevotella present inside their va**nal microbiome.
3️⃣Due to the significant amount of Mycoplasma found in women with PCOS researchers believe with a 95% confidence interval that this genus of bacteria could be a potential biomarker for PCOS.

✨It is so important that research about the va**nal microbiome continues because the incredible amount of information we can learn about the female body from this community of bacteria is significant.

Just Because You Don’t Feel It, Doesn’t Mean It’s Not There

✨Asymptomatic infections refer to when people who have a certain disease or infection do not experience any symptoms. These types of infections are important to note because many people do not seek health care as a result of not feeling any symptoms, become increasingly more susceptible to downstream complications and, in the case of contagious infections, spread disease.

✨Asymptomatic va**nal infections such as bacterial vaginosis, candidiasis, and trichomoniasis can increase susceptibility to other STDs which, if untreated, can lead to a whole host of downstream complications including infertility, ectopic pregnancy and low-birth weight.

✨Always get regular pap smears and STD tests via your doctor and ask lots of questions about any asymptomatic findings, how they should be interpreted and what to do next.

🎄Happy Holidays!🎄

❄️It’s the most wonderful time of the year for many reasons. Getting to warm up near the fireplace with a cup of hot chocolate, spending time with loved ones, and thinking back on all that we have to be grateful for.

❄️Reflecting on 2020, health is something we never want to take for granted again. It is so important to monitor our bodies and protect ourselves and the community. Having access to good research and adequate information on topics concerning particularly womxns health are increasingly important as there has been a clear gap in studies being done to understand women and people with va**nas.

❄️At Juno Bio, we’re working to close the gender health gap. Womxn’s health research has been sidelined for far too long and va**nal health, in particular, is badly in need of a good scientific sorting out. That's why it is our mission to provide personalized, non-judgmental care that doesn't break the bank.

You can learn a lot about your health based on scent.

🌸The way your va**na smells can depend on many things such as how much healthy bacteria is present in your va**nal microbiome, activites such as s*x or exercise, and your menstrual cycle.

🌸Here is what different scents may mean for your health

✨Fishy: If you notice an obvious change in va**nal scent to one that is strongly fishy this may mean that you have an infection. Infections that cause a fishy smell include bacterial vaginosis (BV) or the STD Trichomoniasis. Both are due to disruptions in the normal balance of bacteria in the va**na.

✨Iron: The smell of iron may mean that you are approaching or ending your menstrual cycle. This is a common smell and there is no need for concern unless it is persistent.

✨Ammonia: You may have BV or a UTI (always get a professional opinion and do not self diagnose)

✨Musty: This may happen if you workout a lot or are moving around most of the time. This smell can be due to sweat. This is normal and to best maintain good hygiene rinse the area with water.

✨Bleach: Many women report smelling bleach after having s*x and this can be due to the utilization of different condoms and lubricants.

🌸It’s super important to remember that some level of va**nal odor is perfectly normal but if your va**nal smell deviates too much from what it normally smells like or if the smell is joined by other uncomfortable symptoms like burning, itching, or unusual discharge it’s best to go see a doctor.

The Surprising “Bleaching” Properties of The Va**nal Microbiome

✨We’ve all experienced that annoying moment when we go to fold our laundry and notice bleached marks on our favorite underwear. Turns out our va**nal microbiomes were responsible the entire time.

✨Let's break down how our va**nas “bleach” our underwear

1️⃣Lactobacilli, the good bacteria, in the va**na produce lactic acid to create an environment in which bad bacteria can’t thrive

2️⃣Va**nal discharge (which is normal and healthy to have!) is therefore naturally acidic. Normal pH of the va**na is around 3.8-4.5 but this can change if your va**nal microbiome is disrupted, if you have an infection or if you hit menopause

3️⃣When this acidic discharge is exposed to air, it will oxidize which in turn makes it lighten or “bleach” our underwear

⭐️This process is all completely healthy and NORMAL.

✨Welcome to part 2! Let's finish answering some of the most asked questions regarding the Va**nal Microbiome✨

1️⃣Why am I only just hearing about the va**nal microbiome?
👉🏽The va**nal microbiome and its impact on women’s lives is only just being unravelled. This is partly because the enabling technologies that allow us to do this type of research have only recently come into existence to and well mostly because womxn’s health has always taken a back seat.

2️⃣How do I know what’s in my va**nal microbiome?
👉🏽We tell you. From a simple va**nal swab that you take - think cotton bud, we can tell you exactly what your va**nal microbiome contains. We process the va**nal swab in our labs by extracting all the microbial DNA - that’s just the genetic makeup of the bacteria - and figure out exactly which microbes they belong to, what they’re known to do and what that means for you. The hard bit is what we’re good at - using bioinformatics and machine learning to give you the deepest insights you can get about just what’s down there. We then send you a report with simple explanations so that you know exactly where you stand.

3️⃣Why should I care about my va**nal microbiome?
👉🏽Proactive management of va**nal wellness is paramount to avoiding downstream complications. Knowing what you’re working with is the first step.
