Center for Elders' Independence

Center for Elders' Independence PACE senior healthcare plan serving San Francisco East Bay residents. We keep seniors living at home

Center for Elders' Independence (CEI) is a non-profit health plan that's been serving the San Francisco Bay Area for over 30 years, providing the Program of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) to seniors age 55 and older who prefer not to move into a nursing home but whose health problems make it impossible for them to stay at home without the help of caregivers. PACE is a nationally recogni

zed model of long-term care that offers a broad range of medical, social, and day health services in home-based and community-based settings. CEI's mission statement is to provide high quality, affordable, integrated health care services to the elderly, which promote autonomy, quality of life, and the ability of individuals to live in their communities. The Fund for Elders' Independence (FEI) is a foundation supporting the work of the Center for Elders' Independence.

“We’re people first.” At CEI, during Disability Pride Month, we share what Disability and LGBTQ+ Pride mean to Shannon Hendon, one of our PACE participants, and why representation matters. This month, and every month, we uplift voices like theirs.

As Pride Month comes to a close, we proudly welcome Disability Pride Month in July — a time to honor the strength, joy, and visibility of our disabled community.

Meet Shannon Hendon (they/them), a CEI participant and passionate advocate for mental health, LGBTQ+, and disability rights. Shannon, who has used a wheelchair most of their life, joined CEI’s PACE program last year and shares that they’ve felt truly seen and supported in their healthcare journey.

Shannon opens up about the challenges and triumphs of living with a disability, and shares thoughtful ways we can all be more welcoming and inclusive as a community.

Watch the video for their powerful story — and let’s continue building a world where everyone belongs.
