Terron Edwards in Havana with Community Partnerships for Health Equity
This is Terron Edwards from Milwaukee, WI. Terron has been part of MEDICC's CPHE (Community Partnerships for Health Equity) for over 5 years. He is commenting on a recent exchange in Cuba with CPHE members from Milwaukee, Bronx, Albuquerque, Navajo Nation and New Orleans, including 6 youth, ages 18-23. For the past 15 years, CPHE has provided the experience of traveling to Cuba and also to each other's sites to 12 grassroots communities throughout the US -- for participants who actually live and work in communities experiencing health inequities and systematic racism. With inspiration from Cuba and from each other, the CPHE network contributes to growing strength and solidarity in communities working for health equity and social justice.
Special guests at MEDICC’s 2nd Annual Conference in Santiago de Cuba include Marta Rojas (pictured with MEDICC Deputy Director Jerrontay Foster) and Juan Carlos Vaillant, provincial delegate of Cuba’s Friendship Institute. Vaillant welcomed US and Canadian attendees to Santiago - known for its rebellious history, Caribbean culture and generous hospitality. Marta revered for her novels and journalism - was the during reporter who in 1953 challenged Batista’s accounts of Fidel Castro’s attack on the Moncada Garrison and detailed the young lawyer’s self-defense. "I had gone to Santiago to write about carnival," she said, "until what I thought were fireworks turnet out to be gunshots."
