PHI’s Roots of Change continued to advance a more just food system in 2025, increasing economic opportunity, improving access to local healthy food for low-income families, and building food system resilience for communities. Earlier this year, Roots of Change brought conversations about sustainable, regenerative food systems to Terra Madre, a three‑day international food celebration highlighting the “slow food” movement in Sacramento.

In 2025, PHI’s Cypress Resilience Project reached a significant milestone—reaching over 30,500 participants from across 33 states since the program launched in 2020. From mental health first aid training to their newly launched lunch and learn workshop series, these critical mental health and crisis intervention trainings helped participants develop vital skills, from helping someone struggling with grief, managing a crisis, and de-escalating a stressful conversation before it gets out of hand. In 2025, PHI’s California Coalition for Black Birth Justice continued to bring together birth equity and justice leaders across the state to unify and strengthen the Black birth justice movement in California. Earlier this year, PHI’s Dana Sherrod, the coalition's co-founder and executive director, spoke with Well+Good, discussing why Black moms need a strong support system to address the added challenges they face, like systemic racism and racial bias in healthcare. Strengthening food systems, health access, and gender equity directly contributes to community resilience. Indigenous Mexican populations in both Oaxaca and California face numerous, but similar, social, economic, and health barriers. However, there is often no opportunity for culturally similar but geographically separate organizations and communities to connect and learn from one another to accelerate the cross-pollination of ideas and solutions to achieve positive change both locally and globally. To address these challenges, PHI’s Center for Wellness and Nutrition worked in partnership with Mixteca Indigena Community Organizing Project (MICOP) and Puente a la Salud Comunitaria (Puente) – Solidaridad International Kanda (SiKanda) on the Solidarity Beyond Borders: Connecting for a Better Future project.

This included a short film, “Unidad Ñuu Savi: Solidarity Beyond Border”, which was accepted into the 2025 APHA documentary film series. Read the full impact story and watch the short film:

Research published in 2025 by PHI’s Alcohol Research Group (Public Health Institute) found that people with alcohol use disorders who attended a mutual-help group experienced the same benefits for recovery regardless of the group they chose. The study examined people attending SMART Recovery, LifeRing, and Women for Sobriety (along with 12-step groups like AA), and concluded that these prevalent mutual-help group alternatives can be as effective as AA for those with alcohol problems. “Mutual-help groups are the only demonstrably effective form of continuing care that is widely available throughout the recovery process, but there has been a massive gap in our understanding of promising alternatives to AA,” said PHI’s Dr. Sarah Zemore, Principal Investigator and Senior Scientist.

PHI’s CAMI Health hosted an MPT Symposium at the STI & HIV 2025 World Congress to a standing-room-only audience. Presenters from leading institutions around the world shared insights on advancing MPTs—multi-indication products in development, focused on the prevention of unintended pregnancy, HIV and/or other sexually transmitted infections. The symposium premiered “The Time is Now for MPTs,” a short video featuring community voices from Kenya that powerfully illustrates the real-world need for integrated prevention solutions.

PHI’s Bridge to Treatment program continued to demonstrate its effective, scalable model for substance use treatment. In a New York Times Magazine feature published in February, writer Moises Velasquez-Manoff details 18 months spent observing PHI’s Bridge model at Highland Hospital in Oakland, CA, where he interviewed experts from PHI’s Bridge Center and their networks for this in-depth story on how to curb the opioid epidemic. PHI experts Dr. Andrew Herring and Dr. Aimee Moulin highlight the Bridge model, which works to transform addiction treatment by ensuring that every hospital provides 24/7 access to evidence-based medication for addiction treatment, substance use navigators, and connections to ongoing care in the community. The devastating wildfires in Southern CA earlier this year were a stark reminder of the direct connection between extreme climate events and ongoing and pervasive negative health impacts. PHI’s Anne Kelsey Lamb, director of RAMP - Regional Asthma Management and Prevention, spoke with the Los Angeles Times in March, sharing insight on the negative health impacts of breathing smoke-filled air can cause a range of health issues, and what steps to take to increase your safety in the aftermath of a wildfire. “...[to] avoid exposure, make sure you’re wearing a mask, and I would even have on eyewear, gloves and change clothes,” Lamb said.
