I've never been a fan of the traditional Thanksgiving turkey. I generally find it dry and bland.

Since moving abroad, I still celebrate the harvest, my family, and giving thanks each fall, but I've given up traditions that don't suit me or my new adopted land. Turkey is huge here, especially in Istria. But we do legs braised in a local beer.

We also have incorporated a number of seasonal, local ingredients on to our Thanksgiving menu - pomegranates, white truffles, and citrus. Other things I already associated with Thanksgiving are already grown locally - winter squash, sage, and pears. Other flavors, we have brought from home like the spices for Mexican Chocolate Pie. Last year, I even had my dad fly over a bag of fresh cranberries!

It's fun to read about how other families have made the holiday their own. Also, honey tamarind turkey sounds amazing!

Many come from cultures where turkey isn't appreciated. But with such ingredients as chile peppers, tamarind, fish sauce, spices, plantains and more, they have turned it into something they love.

This article has some really well articulated insights on conflicts between the front and back of house, challenges for restauranteurs, and of course, the housing crisis.

Bottom line? If San Franciscans want to continue eating at restaurants, we need to make sure restaurant staff can afford to live within a reasonable communte of San Francisco.
