Over 6 years ago, Japanese Americans first organized a protest outside of a family detention center in Dilley, TX located just miles from the Crystal City WWII detention site. A few months later, Japanese American elders faced arrest outside Fort Sill in Oklahoma to stop a mass child detention site from opening. After years of organizing alongside communities and organizations impacted by child and family detention, we helped end the use of family and child detention in mass congregate sites under the Biden administration and got all families released.
Earlier this year, the Trump administration shamefully revived the practice of family detention. It was unacceptable when our families were separated under the Alien Enemies Act and incarcerated under Executive Order 9066, it was unacceptable when families were separated and incarcerated under the first administration and continued to be incarcerated under the Biden administration, and it is unacceptable that families are currently being held at the South Texas Family Residential Center in Dilley again.
This Mother’s Day, we’re joining longtime partner organizations, those we’ve previously worked with to shut down family detention sites and end child detention, to continue the fight. We need your help:
