This week the studio reminded me of the big cedar outside my window. Birds flocking home. Full of life. Lots of chirping.

January may bring the fireworks, but in February the real new year begins. The blur of holidays has lifted, and our real life comes into focus.

When I was a young yogini I liked thinking of the new year as a new beginning. Taking a moment to stretch, to breathe, to look back on the past year and squint in the direction of the one ahead seemed like a good way to start.

So I created my own little New Year's Day practice designed to help me get the year off on the right foot. Eventually students began to join me for my little ritual in the living room of my West Oakland home. That was twenty-five years ago, and I've begun every year like this since.

Join me this New Year's Day for clarifying yoga, uplifting chants and yoga nidra guided meditations for good beginnings. Because its nice to connect on holidays. Because it sets a tone for the coming year. Because it feels good.
