We’re so excited to unveil a new visual that beautifully captures Dr. Zaghi’s latest insights into tongue anatomy, introduced at the ALSC Symposium earlier this year. This exciting update reshapes how we understand tongue-tie and mid-tongue restriction, clearing up confusion around around the term posterior tongue-tie. The new terminology reveals that what we’ve been calling a posterior issue is actually linked to the mid-tongue body! These insights will help medical professionals, dental professionals, and speech therapists assess and treat tongue-tie with far greater precision.

A HUGE shout-out to Dr. Zaghi, Chad and Leyli for communicating these paradigm shifts with such epic visuals! Their work makes understanding this complex anatomy so much easier. Go Team Breathe!

If you're excited to share this visual, please tag and The Breathe Institute!

What is a Ankyloglossia “tongue-tie” ??

Ankyloglossia is a condition of altered tongue mobility due to the presence of restrictive tissue between the undersurface of the tongue and the floor of mouth. Restricted tongue mobility may be caused by a short mucosal lingual frenulum and/or by sub-mucosal myofascial fibers of the underlying genioglossus muscle that are fibrosed and impair optimal oral functions. Ankyloglossia may also be attributed to scar tissue from a prior surgical procedure or other trauma.

The un-tethered mobility of the tongue is required for optimal speech, chewing, swallow, oral hygiene, and breathing functions, as well as for development of the maxillofacial complex and upper airway.
