Proud to get my booster today.
I believe in the power of vaccines to mitigate deadly diseases. I believe in the power of nutrition, of getting exercise, of de-stressing, in the power of a good night’s sleep. I believe that socio-economic status and race are determinants in health and disease. I believe that access to resources is not equal. I believe that Covid 19 disproportionately affects people who are older and of poor health.
I’ve been taken aback that some in the wellness community have veered off to push against vaccines and masks. I even agree with some of the arguments out there: that pharmaceutical companies are absolutely making bank, and that the focus shouldn’t just be on vaccines but on how to create a healthier society. Yes to all of that. But the thinking that you will probably (maybe?) be ok because you are healthy, does not take into consideration that there are vulnerable people among our loved ones. That 99% survival rate that you hear of is not equal amongst all demographics.
I wouldn’t be in the line of work I’m in if I didn’t think our health care system needs a dramatic overhaul. But there are absolutely ways in which allopathic and alternative medicines can join hands to both prevent and reduce the effects of disease.
According to the Covid-19.acgov.org, as of 11/2/21, the county I live in, Alameda (which encompasses Berkeley and Oakland), has an 89.7% vaccination rate for folks older than the age of 12. As of 10/26 we have a positivity rate of 1.3%.
On 10/25/21, the case rate per 100,000 was 3.6 in vaccinated folks and 10.3 among unvaccinated. During the last peak, on Aug 6th, those rates were 15.1 among vaccinated and 52.7 among unvaccinated. Those are pretty clear numbers. The vaccines work in slowing the spread of Covid-19.
I have dear friends who will not get this vaccine, and I’m astounded by how each side is firmly entrenched in their beliefs around this issue. I also know that we are influenced by those around us, and thus, I’m sharing my thoughts here.
