What does healing actually feel like?

Doctors can describe a diagnosis. Researchers can cite the data. But only patients can tell you what it’s really like to sit with uncertainty, search for answers, and find hope in integrative care.

That’s why this year’s ICIM National Summit is doing something new: for the first time ever, a Patient Panel will take the stage. Real stories. Real people. Not case studies.

The International Center for Integrative Medicine’s 3rd National Summit brings together practitioners, researchers, and healthcare professionals around the most current advances in integrative medicine, including evidence-based therapies, preventive health, and innovative treatment modalities.

This year, patients are part of that conversation.

What does recovery actually look like after a traumatic brain injury?

Dr. Allison Capizzi, MD breaks it down in her presentation Traumatic Brain Injury Prognosis Updates: Optimizing Brain Health After TBI, Imaging to LTC.

The Glasgow Outcome Scale gives clinicians, researchers, and families a common language for measuring progress, from survival all the way to independent function. Because tracking what matters is how we move care forward.

Consciousness and capability are not the same thing.

We discharge patients when they open their eyes. But waking up is not the same as being able to manage daily life, return to work, or care for yourself.

TBI survivors often fall through the cracks of a system that measures survival, not function.

Dr. Allison Capizzi addressed this directly at last year's summit, covering TBI prognosis, brain health optimization, and the gap between acute imaging and long-term care.

This conversation continues at the ICIM 3rd Annual Summit.

TBIMS follows patients with moderate-to-severe TBI from rehabilitation onward, tracking recovery across years. TRACK-TBI starts in the emergency room, capturing the full spectrum of injury severity through that critical first year.
Neither dataset tells the complete story alone. Together, they do.
At the 2nd Annual ICIM Summit in 2025, Dr. Allison Capizzi, MD brought that into focus with her presentation, Traumatic Brain Injury Prognosis Updates: Optimizing Brain Health After TBI, Imaging to Long-Term Care. The field is moving forward.
Mark your calendars: September 27, 2026 for the 3rd Annual ICIM Summit.

The future of medicine is moving fast.

Dr Qian, MD PhD, presented this slide during his presentation at the 2nd Annual Summit last year. Scientists are working on three things that sound like science fiction but are very real:

Brain stimulation WITHOUT surgery using electric fields to help people with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.

Wireless nerve devices that treat chronic pain, migraines, and even depression.

An AI that talks with patients like a doctor, asking smart questions and forming diagnoses in real time (already being tested at Mayo Clinic!).

This is what "bench to bedside" research means. Taking what works in the lab and actually getting it to patients. So hopeful for what's coming. 🙏

Which one of these blows your mind the most?

At last year's ICIM symposium, Dr. Xiang Qian, MD, PhD, Pain Management Physician and Clinical Professor of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine at Stanford University, reminded us that pain doesn't always have a visible cause.

His presentation: "Breaking the Pain Cycle: Innovative Therapies for Headache and Facial Pain" sparked important conversations we're still building on.

Stay tuned for information concerning this year's event, mark your calendars for September 27, 2027!

Some physicians practice medicine. Dr. Tolbert Small has spent his career reimagining what medicine is for.

A Wayne State graduate, community activist, and one of California’s first physicians to integrate acupuncture into clinical practice, Dr. Small has been a bridge builder across disciplines, communities, and generations. His work with the Black Panther Party’s health programs and his adoption of the Chinese “barefoot doctor” model weren’t detours from medicine. They were medicine at its most honest.

We were honored to have him lecture our residents. His message on justice-centered care is one every clinician needs to hear.
