Did you know there are trillions of tiny bacteria living in your gut? These "good guys" called probiotics help with digestion, immunity, and even mood!
While the exact composition can vary between individuals, several bacterial phyla consistently dominate the human gut. Here are two examples:
Firmicutes: This phylum typically comprises the largest proportion of gut bacteria, ranging from 50 to 80% of the total population. They play a crucial role in various functions, including carbohydrate fermentation, short-chain fatty acid production, and energy harvesting. Examples of common Firmicutes include Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, and Clostridium.
Bacteroidetes: This phylum generally makes up the second-most abundant group, accounting for 20 to 30% of gut bacteria. They are known for their ability to degrade complex carbohydrates and contribute to gut barrier function. Examples of common Bacteroidetes include Bacteroides, Prevotella, and Parabacteroides.
It's important to remember that these are just general ranges, and the specific composition of an individual's gut microbiota can vary significantly depending on various factors like diet, age, environment, and genetics.
