A huge congratulations to our incredible nursing and midwifery graduates! These individuals have officially earned their Bachelor’s in Nursing and Midwifery from Mzuzu University in Malawi and are on the path to becoming licensed, practicing nurses. The graduates expressed deep gratitude to GAIA for the vital support, as they would otherwise not be able to fund their own education. In their words: “Thank you for lifting the burden and helping us achieve our dreams!”

This International Nurses Day, GAIA is excited to announce the launch of our Health Workforce Development Program in Zambia! Through nursing scholarships and fellowships, this initiative will boost access to quality care and address critical healthcare workforce gaps. Malaria remains a significant public health challenge in Malawi and globally, with children under five and pregnant women making up nearly 80 percent of the estimated 597,000 malaria deaths worldwide in 2023. Without prompt treatment, malaria can rapidly escalate to severe illness and death, and pregnant women are even more susceptible to malaria infection, illness and death.

GAIA mobile clinics are working to change this: treating more than 631k malaria cases to date (45,851 cases in 2024 alone), GAIA mobile clinics are providing the prompt diagnosis and treatment critical to saving lives. And the robust antenatal care provided at GAIA mobile clinics includes malaria prophylaxis that is critical to the health of our pregnant clients’ and their unborn children.

GAIA is proud to join the global effort to ensure that “Malaria ends with us.”

Health workers lie at the heart of our global capacity to respond to infectious disease threats and health emergencies, and to build the healthy foundation necessary for development. Health workers at GAIA’s Mobile Health Clinics are doing just that: building health security for rural Malawians living far from government health facilities through more than 270,000 visits per year, including critical preventive and primary care, treatment for over 50,000 malaria cases and care for chronic conditions such as hypertension, HIV, and epilepsy.

On this World Health Day, GAIA celebrates the strides we've made in improving healthcare access and outcomes for under-resourced communities in Malawi. From enhancing maternal and child health to addressing preventable diseases, we're proud of the progress so far. But there’s still much work to be done. Together, we’ll continue our mission to build a healthier, more equitable future for all. Learn more at gaiaglobalhealth.org

Hannah, GAIA Events and Operations Coordinator, just visited Malawi for the first time! Here's what she has to say about her experience seeing GAIA's programs in action:

"I had the incredible privilege of traveling to Malawi to experience GAIA's programs firsthand. I visited two mobile clinic sites where I saw the community receive essential medications and malaria testing. It was truly eye-opening and an unforgettable experience. I also had the opportunity to visit Uplift Malawi's school, where I met the inspiring kids and dedicated staff. From the moment I arrived to the last day of my trip, everyone I encountered was incredibly welcoming and kind. I’m grateful to work for such a wonderful organization."
