On International Nurses Day, we celebrate the nurses whose skill, resilience, and compassion keep Malawi’s healthcare system moving forward. This year’s theme, “Our Nurses. Our Future. Empowered Nurses Save Lives.” highlights the essential role nurses play in delivering lifesaving care and strengthening communities, especially in underserved rural areas. Today, on International Day of the Midwife, we’re sharing powerful stories from Zambia where GAIA nurse-midwife scholars and fellows are helping save lives every day. Through GAIA’s Nursing Scholarship and Fellowship Programs, the next generation of nurse-midwives are already making a difference, providing critical care in underserved areas and strengthening health systems where the need is greatest. Read how these frontline providers are transforming maternal and newborn health in Zambia in our latest blog post here: https://www.gaiaglobalhealth.org/updates/midwives-on-the-frontlines-strengthening-maternal-health-in-zambia

This World Malaria Day, we celebrate a dramatic decline in malaria cases at GAIA Mobile Health Clinics and throughout Malawi, resulting in almost half as many deaths from the disease last year. The new vaccine, administered to young children, whose rollout GAIA board chair Jim Cashel witnessed earlier this year, gets some hard-earned credit for this incredible progress.

GAIA stands alongside partners worldwide, driven to end malaria—because now we can, and now we must.

GAIA is thrilled to partner with the Inteleos Foundation and our district partners to expand access to obstetric ultrasound scanning in rural Malawi -- a tool that is providing critical diagnostic support to our mobile clinic clinicians and reassurance to pregnant clients.

🗣️The Inteleos Foundation is proud to announce the five recipients of the 2026 MedMissions Award! This year's recipients are bringing point-of-care ultrasound to frontline health workers, improving outcomes for high-risk pregnancies in Malawi, Sierra Leone, Kenya, Uganda, and Côte d'Ivoire.👏Congratulations to these inspiring organizations strengthening maternal-fetal healthcare through diagnostics.
