Ahead of World Diabetes Day, new Lancet Commission on diabetes calls for urgent action to address global diabetes epidemic

Over 460 million people worldwide have diabetes, with around 80% of them living in low-income and middle-income countries. Despite high-level commitments to accelerate global action against non-communicable diseases (NCDs), the world is not on-track to reach Sustainable Development Goal 3.4 to reduce premature mortality from major NCDs by 30% between 2015 and 2030. This Lancet Commission on diabetes provides a blueprint for closing gaps in diabetes prevention, care, professional knowledge, and data that could save millions of lives. Modelling done by the Commission shows that use of a data-driven, multicomponent, integrated strategy could avert up to 800 000 premature deaths in the top 10 LMICs with the highest populations of people with diabetes. Implementing this Commission’s recommendations will require a whole-of-society approach to transform ecosystems and care environments. "I was diagnosed with hypertension when I was just 27 years old. Now I am managing two chronic illnesses (hypertension and HIV) which have forced me to make better lifestyle choices." --Babalwa Nelani, mothers2mothers (m2m) Mentor Mother in South Africa

m2m was excited to announce at a virtual launch event today that we are expanding our services to prevent and manage non-communicable diseases, , in the Western Cape of South Africa, thanks to a new partnership with Medtronic Foundation.

NCDs—which include diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and hypertension—are a large, and growing, public health issue in sub-Saharan Africa. In South Africa, 51% of deaths are already caused by NCDs.

With support from the Western Cape Department of Health and the City of Cape Town, Mentor Mothers like Babalwa will use our proven peer-based, community-focused model to educate and support new and existing clients on NCDS and how to manage them. A big thank you to Medtronic Foundation for making this important expansion of our services possible!
