Don’t let them extinguish your spark, and believe me, they will try. From the time you’re little, there will be people who will tell you that you’re too much, too joyous, too feeling.
There will be people who roll their eyes at your smile. There will be people who fold their arms when you cheer. There will be people who want nothing more than to bring you down to where they are, because misery loves company. So does jealousy, pride, insecurity and petty gossip.
They won’t want you higher than them, happier than them, or shinier, but managing them or their opinions is not your concern.
Your concern is to keep your fire.
To keep your heart burning bright.
To stay ablaze.
Because yes, there will be people who get up from the table the second you walk up. There will be people who do everything they can to stomp on your light, but if your love burns them, so be it, because for others, that exact same flame will be the thing that keeps them warm.
So guard your heart. Be wary of the sunshine-stealers. Stay away from the ones who aren’t genuinely for you, and let me assure you, there will be plenty of them.
But don’t let them extinguish your spark.
It is needed. It is necessary. It is good and beautiful and holy.
The most important job you will ever have while walking through this earth, and I wish I’d learned this sooner because my-oh-my how different my life would be, is to stay ablaze. No matter the cost, no matter the price, no matter the sneers of others, in a world that’s cold and cruel and hard—stay ablaze, and make sure others’ fuse gets lighted along the way.
Love,
Amy
