Grateful to learn about elders in the community I serve.
What does love look like to you?
Love is spending everyday like Groundhog Day and yet still learning so many new things about my clients and their lives.
Love is singing hymns to those who are losing their senses during their last stages of life.
Love is bringing clothes, books, decorations ,my children, my dog to enrich what is left of their lives.
Love is sitting and holding space for each and everyone of them. Especially in the wee early hours. Making sure they know they aren’t alone. A squeeze of a hand. Or a cold towel on their forehead as they fever.
Love is serving coffee every morning unpaid after my shift and knows exactly how everyone takes it.
Love is spending extra time with a man who thinks I’m his sweetheart, but I am able to make sure he takes his medication because of that title.
Love is a labor.
Death is a hard labor.
I’m glad I have been called to make it an easier one.

I hope I am remembered as such, and hopefully someone one day will step into my shoes so that I will be met at my end with ease.

How to choose the right health care agent:

Is the person 18 years older and legally able to make decisions for you?
Are they reachable by phone or close by?
Do they know you well?
Will they be unafraid to ask questions and willing to advocate on your behalf, even if it goes against the wishes of others in the family?
Do they feel comfortable helping members of the family communicate?
And last but not least, are they comfortable making EMOTIONAL DECISIONS UNDER STRESS?

What can a Health Care Agent do?

Has access to your medical record
The right to consent or to refuse any care/treatment/service/procedure that would affect a physical or mental condition.
The right to select or discharge health care providers and institutions.
The right to approve or disapprove tests, surgeries, and medications.
The right to approve, withhold, or withdraw artificial nutrition and hydration and all other forms of health care including CPR.
The right to sign up for organ donation, authorize an autopsy and direct disposition of remains.

Do you have a health care agent? This is a person who will make medical decisions for you should you not be able to speak for yourself.

Bear in mind that having emotionally charged people might not always follow your wishes. Make sure that you trust the person to make those tough decisions on your behalf.

Advanced Directive is a legal document that notes your health care wishes should you become terminally ill and unable to make health care decisions for yourself.
They are FREE in EVERY state and you can download print and complete one to keep with your important paperwork.
