Marion Therapeutic Riding Association (MTRA), Ocala, Florida To promote wellness, exercise, and education while providing the miraculous benefits of therapeutic

The therapeutic benefits of the horse were recognized as early as 460 BC, and have continued to evolve over the centuries throughout Europe, the United States and Canada. Today, therapeutic riding therapy is a proven type of physical, emotional and mental therapy for children and adults. Because horseback riding gently and rhythmically moves the client's body in a manner similar to a human gait, clients with physical disabilities often show improvement in flexibility, balance, posture and muscle strength. It has also been proven to affect psychological, cognitive, behavioral and communication functions for clients of all ages. The special relationship formed between horse and client often leads to increased confidence, patience, self-esteem, independence and acceptance. With the benefits so far reaching, MTRA follows an "adaptive equestrian experience" model which enables us to provide a full range of equine-assisted therapeutic programs, including riding therapy, carriage driving, trail courses, equine assisted psychotherapy, Special Olympics and more. This allows us to match client skills to the program best suited for them, while ensuring that we keep pace with the latest techniques to advance the progress of our students. Our riding schedule typically runs 6 days a week, 9 months a year, with morning, afternoon and evening classes. Each lesson provides a combination of riding or carriage driving with ground time to strengthen the bond even deeper between horse and client. Our integrated riding approach enables clients to work with the same horse, the same volunteers and the same instructors for each 9-week period. Whatever type of equine-assisted therapy clients choose, our goal is to help each client achieve their personal best in a warm, professional and consistent environment.

Change can be difficult. There is comfort, often, in routine and consistency and knowing what to expect, but yesterday we tried a new horse. We changed from the horse we knew and trusted the process and discovered that while change can be scary sometimes, it can also be good! It can show us how far we have come, how capable we are, how fun new adventures are, and how this life is a journey that we continue to learn and grow each day no matter how much we think we already have learned… there is always more, and there is a world full of endless opportunities!

It was fun to see Diablo connect with his new rider, and even better to see her slow smile find its way again!

What a day to remember! ☀️⛳️

This past Saturday, February 21, 2026, we celebrated the 10th Annual Tee Up for MTRA Golf Tournament, and it was nothing short of AMAZING!

From the moment the first carts rolled out, the energy was high, the laughs were loud, and the fairways were full of friendly competition. The weather could not have been more perfect — blue skies, sunshine, and that just-right breeze that made it an absolute dream day to be out on the course.

Teams showed up ready to play, our sponsors showed up in a BIG way, and the smiles never stopped. Whether it was incredible shots, playful banter, or celebrating great drives (and a few mulligans 😉), fun was truly had by all!

Most importantly, this special day supports the mission of Marion Therapeutic Riding Association, helping us continue providing life-changing equine-assisted services to our community. And thanks to everyone who participated, sponsored, volunteered, and cheered us on — this 10th anniversary tournament was one for the books!

We can’t wait to share more highlights soon… but for now, THANK YOU for making this milestone year so unforgettable! 🏌️‍♂️💚

✨ MTRA Volunteer Highlight: Rhonda ✨
Rhonda brings a quiet strength and deep compassion to MTRA. Her calm presence and kind heart make her a true gift to everyone she serves alongside. 💛

1️⃣ What inspired you to get involved with MTRA, and what has kept you coming back?
“My husband Ray passed away in December 2024. He was an Air Force veteran who loved horses and was passionate about helping other veterans. He never had the chance to volunteer at MTRA, but each time I come back, I feel comforted knowing I’m honoring his memory. I’ve made many friends here — both humans and horses — and I look forward to being there every week.”

2️⃣ Can you share a moment at MTRA that really stood out to you?
“Connecting with my favorite horse, Mocha, stands out the most. She has the most expressive brown eyes and somehow sensed I was going through a very dark time. When I hug her, I truly feel like she’s hugging me back. Her ears perk up every time she sees or hears me!”

3️⃣ How has volunteering at MTRA impacted you personally?
“Volunteering at MTRA has saved my life. I’ve struggled with anxiety and PTSD, and losing my husband — plus moving to Ocala shortly before — felt overwhelming. The staff, volunteers, and clients are incredibly supportive. Even on hard days, I kept showing up and learning all I could about the horses while helping others. MTRA has helped me heal more than I ever imagined. I’ve regained my confidence and feel hopeful and happy about the future.”

Rhonda, thank you for honoring Ray’s legacy and for allowing MTRA to be part of your healing journey. You inspire us all. 💙🐴

True or False…

Trail ride days are just “pony rides” for the riders to sit back, enjoy, and relax. They are not actively working on their goals as a rider and/or human.

Hugs are often an act of quieting the world and creating a feeling of safety and peace. Hugs have a way of saying things we cannot quite put words to, and at the farm here, horsey hugs are our daily dose of happiness!

What you might NOT realize is there is real science behind the magic of these hugs. Hugs actually release a hormone called oxytocin in the brain. This is known as 'the bonding molecule' as it increases feelings of connection, helps bonding, and reduces feelings of loneliness and isolation.

…as we returned from a ride at the end of our class, checking out each of the pastures and their mini herds, we came upon Joy and Fancy here who certainly look like they are up to SOMEthing! The riders each surmised their own versions of what these gals might be conspiring, and it is always fun and interesting to see how unique and creative each version is.

What do YOU guys think Joy and Fancy were talking about?

🌟 Volunteer Spotlight: Daryl 🌟

Daryl is a true horse whisperer 🐴 and has been a valued part of MTRA since December 2015. His experience, heart for service, and dedication to our riders and horses make him such an incredible member of our volunteer team.

Here’s what Daryl had to share:

1️⃣ What brought you to MTRA, and how long have you been volunteering with us?
“I found out about MTRA when my HOA had a Volunteer Expo. I was curious because of my history with horses — Fox Hunting, Hunter/Jumper, Dressage, 3-day eventing, and horse breeding. I went to the MTRA website and was blown away by all that the organization provides to riders with disabilities. I’ve been a volunteer since December 2015.”

2️⃣ What’s your favorite part of volunteering at MTRA?
“My favorite parts of volunteering at MTRA are bonding with the horses, providing one-on-one assistance to the riders, and the social interaction with the other volunteers and MTRA staff.”

3️⃣ What would you tell someone who’s thinking about volunteering with MTRA?
“To someone thinking of volunteering with MTRA, I would tell them not to underestimate what you can contribute. Share your knowledge and skills. Be open to processes that may be different from what you have learned in the past. Teamwork makes the dream work!”

Daryl, we are so grateful for you! 💙🐎
