Marion Therapeutic Riding Association (MTRA), Ocala, Florida To promote wellness, exercise, and education while providing the miraculous benefits of therapeutic

The therapeutic benefits of the horse were recognized as early as 460 BC, and have continued to evolve over the centuries throughout Europe, the United States and Canada. Today, therapeutic riding therapy is a proven type of physical, emotional and mental therapy for children and adults. Because horseback riding gently and rhythmically moves the client's body in a manner similar to a human gait, clients with physical disabilities often show improvement in flexibility, balance, posture and muscle strength. It has also been proven to affect psychological, cognitive, behavioral and communication functions for clients of all ages. The special relationship formed between horse and client often leads to increased confidence, patience, self-esteem, independence and acceptance. With the benefits so far reaching, MTRA follows an "adaptive equestrian experience" model which enables us to provide a full range of equine-assisted therapeutic programs, including riding therapy, carriage driving, trail courses, equine assisted psychotherapy, Special Olympics and more. This allows us to match client skills to the program best suited for them, while ensuring that we keep pace with the latest techniques to advance the progress of our students. Our riding schedule typically runs 6 days a week, 9 months a year, with morning, afternoon and evening classes. Each lesson provides a combination of riding or carriage driving with ground time to strengthen the bond even deeper between horse and client. Our integrated riding approach enables clients to work with the same horse, the same volunteers and the same instructors for each 9-week period. Whatever type of equine-assisted therapy clients choose, our goal is to help each client achieve their personal best in a warm, professional and consistent environment.

Sometimes we get turned around in life and the path looks a little different than maybe what we expected, but when we take a closer look, there is much we can learn and enjoy nonetheless!

Similarly, sometimes we will have a rider we turn around and face the back of their horses instead, and it is really interesting the sensory input and impact this has on many! It gives a different perspective, a new feel, and for some an inexplicable sense of joy and relaxation. For this youngster, she found laughter, freedom to hug her horse in a new light, and a nice stretch with fluid movement. The giggles that ensued, and her Halloween fluffy tutu brought a smile to us all and a contented sigh from Mocha at the end of this class!

Wishing everyone a safe and happy weekend!

Every horse tells a story through their unique markings—those white blazes, socks, stars, and snips aren’t just beautiful—they’re part of their identity. These markings are like nature’s fingerprints; no two are alike! They can even give hints about a horse’s breed, lineage, and personality. Every time we work with our herd, we’re reminded how special each horse truly is. 🐴✨

What begins as a chance to help quickly becomes something so much more — a family built on laughter, learning, and the love of horses. At MTRA, volunteers and instructors don’t just teach; they connect, encourage, and grow together. Every class is a reminder that the magic of equine therapy isn’t just in the horses — it’s in the people who come together to make it all possible.

There are many ways to get involved or help us in carrying out our mission at MTRA! You can volunteer for groundskeeping, special projects, horse care, leading and sidewalking in classes, outreach, and more. We are also always in need of scholarship funds to help us serve individuals and riders in need of our services. They learn horsemanship skills on many levels, but also personal growth and development that will aid them in processing and leading successful lives for all of their days to come!

These two report they have learned to believe in themselves, step into leadership roles, hold their heads up high, and empathize with their horses and how they are feeling which helps them to regulate themselves a little better. They simply “love” their horses and look forward to their rides and trying new things. Ryleigh aspires to be a professional horsewoman one day, and she goes home to watch videos and read all about them every chance she gets. Orion loves playing video games and has a a toolbox full of interesting facts he shares each week! He communicates and engages often these days where we used to have to pull the words and conversations out of him.

If you would like to support our scholarship fund in any amount, please follow the link below or reach out to us today to see how you, too, can create a lasting impact for someone very special! Partial scholarships are $300 or full scholarships are $600, but you can contribute in smaller amounts also!

An interesting quote, but it pertains to our artsy days in the barn if you really think about it. Sometimes, we are tapping into our well of creativity, and sometimes we are learning to reflect on why our well seems so dry while receiving help from the wells around us. Sometimes, we paint words that reflect positive attributes or feelings about our horse, and then we learn to apply positive attributes to our own selves. And sometimes, it is letting go and simply tapping into what moves us in that moment. There are so many parts, but this quote reflects beautifully what we hope these days offer:

“In order to create, we draw from our inner well. This inner well, an artistic reservoir, is ideally like a well-stocked fish pond… If we don’t give some attention to upkeep, our well is apt to become depleted, stagnant, or blocked…As artists, we must learn to be self-nourishing. We must become alert enough to consciously replenish our creative resources as we draw on them — to restock the trout pond, so to speak.”

The power in a smile… it is a smile holding joy and happiness and pride in achieving great things, in meeting our goals, in putting in the time and the effort, and in trying the things we are not quite sure we can do yet… and then we do! These horses give us that, and this connection we find gives us that and more. There is nothing like it, nor words to truly describe the magic that transpires.
