Living with GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) can not only affect your everyday life, but it can also be extremely stressful when it comes social activities!

Here are a few tips that allow you to still enjoy social events while staying within your food restrictions.

EAT BEFOREHAND-

If you know that you will be attending an upcoming event it’s always helpful to eat before hand, which would help lessen cravings for certain foods that would ultimately do your body harm.

FIND OUT THE MENU-

Sometimes something as simple as asking the host what foods will be on the menu can help a great deal! It allows you to know whether or not you should eat ahead of time, or to even let them know what dietary restrictions you may have. Which brings us to our last tip.

SPEAK UP-

Most of us don’t like to ‘burden’ anyone with our restrictions but many times we have found that family and friends love being able to modify and/or offer other dishes that may suit your needs if it means you are able to go and enjoy yourself! So don’t be afraid to let them know!

Planning ahead can make all the difference!
What are some ways YOU handle eating at social functions with GERD or any other dietary restrictions?

If you've been diagnosed with GERD, we recommend to wait at least three hours before you lie down after a meal. Gravity normally helps keep acid reflux from developing. When you eat a meal and then stretch out for a nap, you're taking gravity out of the equation. As a result, acid more easily presses against the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) and flows into the esophagus. This results in that uncomfortable heartburn sensation that'll keeps you up all night.

At Gastroenterology Associates, your health is our No. 1 concern. That’s why we remind our patients when it’s time for them to get screened for colon cancer. For those patients who’ve had a colonoscopy before, it’s critical that you continue to follow-up. If you're over 40 and have not had a colonoscopy before, we recommend you make this a priority. Colon cancer is 90 percent curable if detected early, and experts predict 30,000 lives could be saved each year if everyone 40 and over got tested, as well as those who have a history of polyps.
