Dominique has one son and loves spending time at home with her family and enjoying good food. Dominique returned home from her scheduled dialysis session and developed profuse bleeding from an AV fistula (a surgically created access point for dialysis) that did not resolve with compression from family members. On the way to the hospital, she went into cardiac arrest.

She was immediately transfused with two units of packed red blood cells and two units of plasma. A surgeon placed sutures at the AV fistula site to control the bleeding. Her hospital care was complicated by acute blood loss anemia, lactic acidosis, and respiratory failure requiring tracheostomy and mechanical ventilation. A feeding tube was also placed.

Dominique was transferred to Kindred Hospital Ocala for ventilator management, medical optimization, and rehabilitation. The respiratory team was instrumental in her care, assisted by the wound team, dietitian, nursing, and rehabilitation. She received aggressive treatment and was liberated from mechanical ventilation and decannulated. She made significant progress with therapy to the point of being able to sit and stand multiple times and participate in exercises. She also received feeding tube management and dialysis.

Dominique was excited to get back to the comfort of her home, where she was discharged after her stay at Kindred.

Paul was admitted to a local hospital due to respiratory failure and a traumatic brain injury. He required a tracheostomy, mechanical ventilation, and a feeding tube. Once stabilized, Paul was transferred to Kindred Hospital Ocala for ongoing care.

Upon admission, Kindred’s interdisciplinary team implemented an aggressive respiratory approach, successfully decannulating and weaning Paul to room air. Paul initially required assistance for all aspects of self-care and mobility. He was unable to communicate or swallow.

Physical, occupational, and speech therapy evaluations were conducted to assess Paul’s functional deficits in mobility, self-care, and speech. Paul diligently participated in all his therapies and improved significantly in strength, mobility, communication, and swallowing.

Paul can now complete all aspects of his daily activities with someone nearby for support. He can engage in conversations, walk with a walker, and consume regular meals. Congratulations, Paul, for your remarkable recovery and success at Kindred Hospital Ocala!

Kenneth, 48, was admitted to the hospital with respiratory failure. Due to multiple complications, he required a tracheostomy and mechanical ventilation. Once medically stabilized, Kenneth was transferred to Kindred Hospital Ocala for continued care and rehabilitation.

Upon admission, Kenneth was evaluated by an interdisciplinary team that included physicians, nurses, and respiratory therapists. The team implemented an aggressive respiratory care plan, successfully weaning him from mechanical ventilation and ultimately decannulating his tracheostomy, allowing him to breathe comfortably on room air.

At the time of admission, Kenneth required total assistance for all aspects of self-care and mobility. He was minimally communicative and unable to swallow safely. Physical, occupational, and speech therapy evaluations were completed to assess his functional limitations in mobility, self-care, communication, and swallowing.

With consistent therapy and strong determination, Kenneth made steady progress. He actively participated in all therapy sessions and demonstrated significant improvement in strength, mobility, communication, and swallowing abilities.

Today, Kenneth is able to complete his daily activities with minimal assistance. He enjoys engaging in conversation with family and staff, walks with a walker, and eats regular meals. Kenneth’s recovery is a testament to his hard work and the coordinated, compassionate care provided by the Kindred Hospital Ocala team.

Today, we proudly recognize National Nurse Practitioner Week – a time to honor the incredible Nurse Practitioners (NPs) at our facility and across the country who bring skill, compassion, and accessibility to healthcare every single day. NPs are the heartbeat of patient-centered care – listening, diagnosing, treating, and advocating with unmatched dedication. While this week shines a spotlight on their contributions, their impact is felt all year long in hospitals, clinics, and communities nationwide.

To all our NPs: thank you for making healthcare more human, more reachable, and more exceptional.
