🦵💤 Are You Overlooking These Signs of Venous Insufficiency?
Venous insufficiency often shows up before a venous ulcer ever forms.

Here are the common signs to look for:
🔹 Tired, heavy legs
🔹 Swelling (edema)
🔹 Aching or discomfort
🔹 Skin discoloration in the lower extremities
These symptoms might seem harmless at first, but they’re early warning signs of something more serious.

💬 Comment “YES” if you want to watch a short video that breaks it down and helps you or your patients prevent complications and reach this result

🐶🚫 Pets and Pools? Not Around the Wound!
One of the most overlooked causes of wound infections is improper hygiene at home.
⚠️ Please keep your pets away from the wound.
You’d be surprised how often I hear:
👉 “My dog licked it”
👉 “My cat brushed against it”

As sweet as that sounds, it's a huge risk for infection.
This kind of exposure can quickly delay healing and lead to serious complications.
Also, remember:
🚫 No baths
🚫 No pool time
🚫 No beach days

💡 Stick to safe, dry, and clean environments to support healing and achieve this result.
💬 Comment “SAFE” if you’d like a short checklist of what to avoid during wound care recovery

🧤🦠 Infection Slows Healing, Here's How to Avoid It...
Wounds are more vulnerable to infection if they aren’t cleaned and handled properly.
And once infected, healing can drastically slow down.

Here’s how to stay safe:
✅ Wash your hands thoroughly with antibacterial soap
✅ Avoid touching the wound if possible
✅ Always wear gloves when handling, changing, or reapplying dressings

Protecting the wound = protecting the healing process
It’s simple steps like this that lead to this result

🚿🩹 Can You Shower with a Wound?
The answer is… it depends

This is when your provider helps guide you based on your wound type and condition
✅ Sometimes you can shower
✅ Sometimes you can’t

But that doesn’t mean you can’t keep clean
💧 In some cases, we recommend:
A sponge bath to reduce surface bacteria
Covering the wound with a sealed plastic bag and tape

⚠️ But be careful
If the dressing gets wet, you must change it immediately
Why? Because it now contains:
🧼 Soap residue
🦠 Bacteria from your skin
It can contaminate the wound and delay healing

🦵 That Red Rash Might Be a Warning Sign
Did you know there’s often a red rash that appears before a venous ulcer develops?
That rash is called stasis dermatitis

It’s caused by increased pressure in the legs which leads to:
🩸 Proteins and blood cells leaking into the subcutaneous tissue
🧬 The result: inflammation and visible red patches

Over time, this rash begins to darken
🔁 It shifts from red → brown → black
This process is known as hemosiderin staining
It’s one of the early signs of chronic venous insufficiency and should not be ignored.

🧴🩹 The Good, the Bad, and the Truth About Wound Cleansers

Let’s talk wound cleansers:
✅ What they are
✅ What they do
✅ And which one is still the best choice today

Wound cleansers are solutions with multiple key functions:
🧪 Reduce bacterial burden
💦 Flush the wound
🧼 Remove debris and exudates

🚿 Showering with a Wound? Here's What Some Doctors Recommend
Did you know there are regions in the country where doctors actually recommend using a shower and a water pick to clean wounds?

Here’s how it works:
💧 The water pick is used to gently flush the wound
It helps decrease the bacteria burden
This method is still being practiced today in certain cases
BUT it’s only recommended when the provider trusts the patient’s hygiene practices
That means the patient must:
✅ Use clean gloves after showering
✅ Redress the wound properly
✅ Minimize contamination risks
✅ Maintain a clean, controlled environment
So yes, it’s possible to shower if done under clear guidance but it requires responsibility, precision, and full awareness to achieve this result

🩸 Why Arterial Wounds Are Always Dry
Arterial wounds are typically dry
But why?
Because there’s no blood flow to the area
🩸 That means:
🔹 They can’t retain moisture
🔹 They show minimal bleeding
When assessing wounds with these two characteristics—
✅ Dry wound bed
✅ Minimal or no bleeding
You may be looking at an arterial wound caused by poor circulation

🦵 Signs You May Be Dealing with Venous Insufficiency
There are clear signs and symptoms that may indicate venous insufficiency in the lower extremities. These often include:
🔹 Legs that feel tired
🔹 Noticeable swelling (edema)
🔹 Persistent aching or heaviness
🔹 Discoloration of the lower legs
These symptoms shouldn't be ignored. They may be early indicators of underlying circulatory issues that can lead to more serious complications like venous ulcers if not addressed.

🔍 How to Identify Arterial Wounds by Appearance?

🔴That “Red Rash” May Not Be What You Think…
Did you know that a red rash often appears before a venous ulcer opens?
Here’s why:
🩸 Proteins and red blood cells begin to leak into the tissue
🔴 Since red blood cells are red, this creates a rash across the lower legs
😕 Many confuse it with dermatitis—but it's actually a warning sign!
This condition is called stasis dermatitis, an early stage of chronic venous insufficiency.
Over time, that bright red rash…
⬇️ turns dark purple
⬇️ then brown
⬇️ and even black 🖤
That happens because of a process called hemosiderin staining, where iron from red blood cells gets trapped in the tissue.

🦵🔥 Recognizing Pain Symptoms of Arterial Ulcers
The #1 symptom of arterial ulcers in the lower extremities is pain. 😣
Patients often report:
🔹 Pain in the buttocks
🔹 Pain that worsens with walking or exercising (known as intermittent claudication)
🔹 Burning foot pain or pain at rest
🔹 Worse pain when legs are elevated 🛏️
🔹 Relief when legs are lowered toward the ground 🦵⬇️
💡 This happens because blood flow decreases when the legs are elevated and increases when they are lowered!
Knowing these signs helps you identify arterial issues early and improve patient outcomes. 🩹
