How do you measure Recovery?

We all know we need to recover after challenging workouts, but how do you know if the recovery tool you’re using is working?

Many of us use devices that track sleep, heart rate, and heart rate variability such as the Apple Watch, Whoop, or the Oura ring.

Signs that your form of recovery is working includes a decrease in resting heart rate, an elevation in heart rate variability, and improved sleep quality/quantity.

The sauna is one form of recovery that has shown improvements in all these areas making it a good bet for recovery.

What is Brown Fat?

Brown fat breaks down glucose (blood sugar) and fat molecules to help maintain body temperature. When we are exposed to the cold, it activates this brown fat.

A study published in Nature and funded by the NIH on 2021 showed that when brown fat was activated by the cold, it produces a protein that shuttles BCAAs into mitochondria where they are used to generate heat. When this protein was blocked in mice, it led to obesity and diabetes. Previous research on brown fat has shown in humans that those with lower brown fat were more likely to be obese and be diabetic.

Regular (11-minutes/week) exposure to cold has been shown to activate brown fat and reduce the risk of obesity and diabetes.

One month into the new year. How are you monitoring your health progress?

If your goals include loosing body fat and gaining muscle, how are you tracking your progress? Without this information how can you know if the diet and exercise strategies you implement are working?
