After the snow last weekend we have definitely seen more than a few patients with low back pain from shoveling snow. Most of these injuries are due to one (or both) of two culprits: improper shoveling technique and/or weak core muscles. When shoveling, try to avoid bending and twisting at the low back. Stand facing more forward towards the shovel head and use you legs as much as possible to minimize stress to the low back. However, if you have weak core muscles you may still irritate your low back just from the repetitious movement. The core muscles stabilize your spine so a weak core can result in shifting of the spinal segments. If you have to shovel snow again this weekend and aggravate your low back, give us a call. It’s always tough to lose a staff member, especially one that’s been here for 29 years! Today is Lisa’s last day as she transitions into retirement and life as a full time grandma. Hopefully she won’t be a total stranger, as she may be available to fill in on occasion if someone is on vacation. We wish her the best of luck and a happy retirement!

The discs are the shock absorbers of the spine. They are little gel-filled cushions between the vertebrae that also allow movement of the spine. Sometimes these discs can become shifted or compressed by activities such as lifting, bending, running, or even bouncing on a rough boat ride. This can often result in back pain and even sciatica.
