Southern California Fires Highlight Disaster Preparedness
People with hearing loss face additional challenges
Although emergencies like this one, Hurricane Helene and other recent natural disasters can be tough for anyone, people with hearing loss or other disabilities are especially at risk.
Here are some tips to prepare for a potential evacuation and stay safe:
Stay current with technologyâdownload smartphone apps such as the FEMA App for disasters, Watch Duty for wildfires and your local city or county emergency alerts.
Heed any official warnings and evacuations immediately. Most alerts are now transmitted in text format, whether via cellphone or on the television screen, and there is even American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation available in some areas.
Prepare a âgo bagâ that includes backup devices, extra batteries, chargers and accessories, in addition to standard recommended evacuation items.
Hearing Aid and Implant Manufacturers Step Up to Help with Missing Equipment
If you or anyone you know has been evacuated from the L.A. fires without critical hearing equipment, reach out to your hearing care professional (HCP) immediately. Many hearing aid and cochlear implant (CI) manufacturers, as well as local audiologists and hearing aid specialists, are offering to replace missing or damaged devices, chargers, batteries and related items free of charge.
