Excellent book about the brain science of grieving.

What most stands out to me with the work I engage in with somatic movement and with meditation is that humans are patterning-beings. We create and rely on patterns for food, water, shelter, and as mammals we want to know where our most trusted loved ones are.

When someone dies, our brain has to learn a new pattern, that our loved one is not in those places we expect, and this takes a considerable amount of time for the brain to adapt to a new pattern.

Until the brain adapts a new pattern about our loved one, we will continue to experience the sudden wave of realization that they are not where we expect them, which leads to feelings and thoughts that often contain yearning and sadness.

Creating new patterns about where our loved ones are, whether with spirital beliefs and rituals or new habits that help us feel a connection to them, like having coffee with their picture in the morning or visiting a place you shared together or where their remains may be, helps our brain re-pattern in positive ways.
