Everyone who reaches out to me has problems and challenges that I can easily show how to fix and help solve with my eyes closed. There are certainly diets with whom you can definitely do cheap (and fast) in the short-term . . . and then cheap (and fast) again and again and again. So, โ€œcheapโ€ becomes very expensive over time, and โ€œfastโ€ actually becomes โ€œneverโ€.

I do understand that sometimes people cannot see themselves at a weight I set, but I see it, and I have been doing this successfully for a very long time. My job is not to get you to a weight that you want to be if that weight is still overweight; itโ€™s not to get you to the โ€œslimmest Iโ€™ve ever beenโ€ if that is still overweight. My job is to get you to the weight I know you must be โ€” so I can put you through stabilization and maintenance programs to give you the best chance of never being overweight again. If you have 50 pounds to lose but only want to lose 30, this is not the program for you.

I tell it like it is, and sometimes what โ€œisโ€ isnโ€™t what you want to hear. The process of changing oneโ€™s eating and lifestyle habits must include the process of owning up to why you are where you are, taking responsibility for your actions, and taking the โ€œvictimโ€ and โ€œblameโ€ cards out of your deck. Both those cards donโ€™t โ€œplayโ€ well with me. And if you canโ€™t handle hearing โ€œCut the crapโ€ when itโ€™s relevant, youโ€™re not the right client for me.

๐Ÿ•. ๐€๐ซ๐ž ๐ง๐จ๐ญ ๐œ๐ฅ๐จ๐ฌ๐ž-๐ฆ๐ข๐ง๐๐ž๐. My experience is that those who think they โ€œknow it allโ€ when it comes to weight loss simply because theyโ€™ve been dieting forever are also those who are unwilling to be open-minded about a new way of doing things. Theyโ€™re full of โ€œI canโ€™tsโ€ and โ€œI wonโ€™tsโ€ in terms of what they canโ€™t do and/or wonโ€™t eat or drink (excluding allergies and medical issues, of course), or wonโ€™t give up. Theyโ€™ll throw the money at me and think that because they โ€œjoinedโ€ the program, thatโ€™s the same as โ€œdoingโ€ the program. If this is you, save your money. This is the wrong program for you.

When I talk to new clients about the necessity of lowering their sodium, and to especially stop adding table salt to their dinner plates, the look of panic and horror often follows. Many are so addicted that, by rote response, will reach for a saltshaker before they even taste the food on their plate. At that point, โ€œWell, what about sea salt?โ€ is often a question Iโ€™m asked.

Table salt and sea salt have the same basic nutritional value, even though sea salt is often marketed as a more natural and healthier alternative. The most notable differences between sea salt and table salt are in their taste, texture and processing.

Table salt is typically mined from underground salt deposits. Table salt is more heavily processed to eliminate minerals and usually contains an additive to prevent clumping. Most table salt also has added iodine, an essential nutrient that helps maintain a healthy thyroid.

Sea salt is produced through evaporation of ocean water or water from saltwater lakes, usually with little processing. Depending on the water source, this leaves behind certain trace minerals and elements. The minerals add flavor and color to sea salt, which also comes in a variety of coarseness levels.

By weight, table salt and sea salt contain the same amount of sodium.

People who are overweight are at increased risk of developing high blood pressure and heart disease. Our clients know that, and too many already have those medical issues. Most over-consume salt (sodium) in their diets which intensifies the problem. Many donโ€™t realize that most of the sodium in their diet comes from the processed foods that we all eat, and not the table salt that we add to our cooking and meals. Additionally, certain processed foods that you wouldnโ€™t think contain much sodium can contain alot of sodium.

Regardless of which type of salt you prefer, limit total sodium to less than 1,500 milligrams per day.

Even if youโ€™re one of the lucky ones who lost easily in the first few weeks of your diet, newcomers be forewarned:

There ๐š๐ซ๐ž speed bumps ahead.

This is when no matter how much you stick to your plan you just can't seem to lose any weight.

This is your first ๐™จ๐™ฉ๐™–๐™ก๐™ก, a period where your body is pausing after the first rush of lost weight, the bodyโ€™s way of adjusting to a rapid weight loss. (This is not to be confused with a ๐™ฅ๐™ก๐™–๐™ฉ๐™š๐™–๐™ช, when your weight, body measurements, and your body fat havenโ€™t changed for a month or more.)

The trick, if you have these fits-and-starts style of losing weight, is to look back on the entire time youโ€™ve been dieting and figure out how much weight youโ€™ve lost per week, on average. So, for example, if you lost 10 pounds in the first two weeks and then stall and lose nothing for the next three, you will still have lost an average of 2 pounds per week, which is a very desirable rate.

The important thing to remember?

Donโ€™t let your speed bumps turn into stop lights.

Keep going.

Considering the impact other exercises may have on the joints, yes, I believe walking is the best exercise.

Walking slowly will burn additional calories when youโ€™re carrying extra weight because youโ€™re exerting more energy to move your body. For the morbidly obese, however, or even those who are overweight but already suffering with feet, hips and joints problems, walking may be difficult.

For those folks, one of the easiest and most effective ways to ease into a healthier lifestyle is to exercise in the water. Water helps to support your body weight, which makes you feel lighter. It also reduces the impact on your joints, which means that the pain you might feel in your hips or knees from walking on land is virtually nonexistent when you stand in the water.

It's a start, it gets you moving, it's social.

If Iโ€™m in a discussion with an obese client who doesnโ€™t exercise or partake in any fitness activities at all, I always suggest they at least consider visiting the closest fitness facility that has a pool. Most pool facilities offers group fitness classes, or private one-on-one instruction, and almost all of them invite you to check out a class for free.
