🙌 BREASTFEEDING FACT 🙌
Breastfeeding moms use extra calories to make breast milk whether from their diet or their "extra" fat stores.
While breastfeeding you typically just need to listen to your body and your appetite to know how much to eat and get enough calories to maintain an adequate milk supply.
It is common to feel hungry especially in the beginning or as your baby goes through normal periodic growth spurts…or just all the time!
For most moms, the additional fat stores in the body as a result of the pregnancy will be more than enough to account for the additional calorie requirement needed and they will not need to increase their intake in any way.
Breastfeeding moms need about 1800-2200 calories per day to maintain an abundant and adequate milk supply. If your body does not have the additional fat stores to draw from, consuming less than 1500-1800 calories could put your supply at risk.
Many factors go into whether you will need to consume the extra calories such as your BMI, your activity level and your nutritional status. Eating foods higher in nutritional value may reduce your need for the extra calories than eating a lot of less nutritional or processed foods.
On average, about 500 calories per day will used to produce your breast milk. Taking in 500 extra calories is what an exclusively breastfeeding mother typically needs to maintain her pre-pregnancy weight, although this is not the same for all women.
This amount is an average and other factors will impact this. Such as the amount of breastfeeding you are doing, whether it is exclusive, mostly breast milk, or just a feeding or two per day…and your individual fat reserves or your BMI (Body Mass Index).
The more reserves you have, the less calories you will require and the less reserves you have the more calories you will need to take in to maintain a full and adequate milk supply.
