What is Work-Life Balance ?
Years ago when I was doing a lot of Employee Consulting I often did wellness training on the topic of Work- Life Balance. Then and now many employees, who work full time, find it difficult to find a healthy balance. Wikipedia has a very detailed and interesting history about working hours over the decades and in different countries .
We all know people who are, or maybe you consider yourself to be a “workaholic “. High-level corporate jobs often encourage long hours for career advancement. Some lower-wage workers hold two jobs just to cover basic expenses.
Health can begin to suffer when a person is out of balance. Sleep is usually the first thing to go, stress prevents a good night sleep. Long term lack of adequate sleep, as we are aware, then leads to a host of psychological and physical issues.
Often, we overcommit ourselves and then lack the time needed to unwind and relax. Occasionally, it's important to pause and reassess your priorities. Yes, be realistic you may have to give up some things to find balance, after all there are only 24 hours in a day. I have worked with clients who are not sleeping well, and upon further discussion I learn they respond to texts and emails during the night. We need to shut off from work, leave the phone off while sleeping. The world will still be spinning in the morning.
Work-life balance means building a lifestyle that is both rewarding and sustainable.
