Congrats to this year's Mount Sinai South Nassau Golf Outing Lifesaver Award winner, Dr. Jay Itzkowitz, MD, Chair of Mount Sinai South Nassau's Emergency Department. He's our own "Dr. Robby" - overseeing the care of hundreds of patients each week who come to our ER at all hours of the day and night, often at their most vulnerable moments. Dr. Jay and his staff of physicians, nurses and support staff handle some 75,000 patient visits each year at our Oceanside and Long Beach Emergency Department. He always has a smile and is cool under fire, including during years of construction that has resulted in an expanded $50M ED that is now the size of a football field with individual exam rooms, a new triage area and dedicated space for behavioral health patients. Amid the multi-year expansion, Emergency Department nurses in collaboration with Dr. Itzkowitz and hospital leadership implemented a series of innovations that helped improve the “left without being seen” patient rate, which is a key measurement of emergency department patient satisfaction and performance, from 7 percent in 2023 to below 2 percent in 2024.

We are proud to announce that Mount Sinai South Nassau has earned a 2026 Patient Safety Excellence Award from Healthgrades, ranking it among the nation’s top hospitals for patient safety. Only 10 percent of hospitals across the country achieved the ranking! Healthgrades evaluated risk-adjusted complication and mortality rates from approximately 4,500 hospitals nationwide across 13 patient safety indicators, each representing a serious, preventable complication, and Mount Sinai South Nassau came out on top “by preventing infections, medical errors, and other preventable conditions,” Healthgrades said. Congratulations to our team on keeping our patients' safety a top priority!
