Breastfeeding with a ni**le piercing is usually safe and effective.

It is important to remove jewellery for each feeding. Jewellery is a choking hazard and makes it harder for your baby to latch on. It may also hurt the inside of your baby’s mouth or pass bacteria to the baby. You may choose to remove jewellery before each feeding or for the whole time you breastfeed. Milk often leaks from the piercing site when you remove the jewellery. But that’s okay.

Once you start breastfeeding, your baby’s saliva will transfer bacteria to your ni**le. So, if you are thinking of getting a ni**le piercing, plan to do it 12 to 18 months before getting pregnant. Ni**le piercings may take up to a year to heal. During that time, your ni**le will become more resistant to infection. Your body will also create a tunnel or channel inside the ni**le (called a fistula) to help the ni**le heal. It is best to give your ni**le time to heal before the hormonal and other physical changes of pregnancy take place.

An Important reminder!

“Ladies, with the holidays right around the corner, I just wanted to remind all you bad b***y breastfeeding mommas to STAND YOUR GROUND. Do not allow your family to bully, embarrass or shame you for nursing your baby. And don't let them try to peer pressure you into "little tastes" either. YOU are momma and YOU know what's best for your baby. I hope everyone has safe and happy holidays! ❤”

I’m seeing so, so many babies using ni**le shields these days (or as some local hospitals call them, “breast shields” or “ni**le guards”) and I understand why; postpartum staff are trying to get families out of the hospital ASAP and a ni**le shield can be a fast way to get baby to latch.

The problem is that ni**le shields should be used as a tool and most families don’t have any idea how to get rid of them once they’re home!

One big issue is that latching a baby with a ni**le shield is very “put tab A in slot B”, and for lots of babies this method *only* works with a shield. Instead I teach families to do what I call an up & over latch. Planting baby’s chin firmly on the breast is what makes them open wide, and the feeling of the ni**le on the roof of their mouth helps to trigger their suck reflex. Instead of bringing baby straight to the ni**le like a bullseye I want you to imagine how a Pez dispenser or Hungry Hungry Hippo opens & closes.

Coming up & over puts a big old mouthful in baby’s mouth and usually the first time you do it you’ll see their eyes light up, as if they’re finally figuring out how this latching thing is supposed to work!

For more info on this method and all of my best tricks for ditching the shield, visit my freshly updated “ten step process for weaning from the ni**le shield” here: https://www.rachelobrienibclc.com/blog/my-ten-step-process-for-weaning-from-the-ni**le-shield/
