STATISTICS ABOUT SUBSTANCE ABUSE:
• Overall Prevalence: As of 2024, approximately 48.4 million people aged 12 or older (16.8%) had a past-year substance use disorder.
• Drug Overdose Crisis: The most critical trend is the dramatic rise in fatal overdoses, which have increased six-fold since 2000, with a steep acceleration in the last decade due to synthetic opioids.
• Specific Substance Disorders (2021–2024):
o Drug Use Disorder: Increased from 8.7% (2021) to 9.8% (2024) of the population aged 12+.
o Alcohol Use Disorder: Decreased from 10.6% (2021) to 9.7% (2024).
o Ma*****na Use Disorder: Increased from 6% (2021) to 7.1% (2024).
• Adolescent Trends: Teen substance use generally declined from 2011 to 2021. Reported use of most drugs among adolescents reached all-time lows in 2024, although cannabis use disorder remained stable.
Significant Data Points in the Last Decade:
• 2013–2019: Synthetic opioid (fentanyl) deaths increased by 1,040%.
• 2020: Drug overdose deaths increased by an annual rate of 31%.
• 2022: Over 107,941 drug overdose deaths were recorded in the U.S..
• 2023–2024: While overall overdose deaths began to show a slight decline by late 2024 (down from ~33 per 100,000 to ~24 per 100,000), addiction rates for specific substances like ma*****na remained elevated.
Treatment and Recovery Gap
• Low Treatment Rates: In 2024, only about 1 in 5 (19.3%) people needing substance use treatment received it.
• Treatment Barriers: 59.5% of people with an unmet need for treatment cited they were not ready to stop using substances, while others cited expense or lack of knowledge on where to go.
Note: Data from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) NSDUH, particularly from 2020 onward, has used updated methodology, making long-term comparison sometimes challenging, but the overall trend shows a significant rise in substance use disorders.
