Juneteenth marks our country’s second Independence Day, commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. It is a celebration of freedom, resilience, and joy but also a time to reflect on how far we’ve come as a nation—and how far we still have to go.

As Mary Elliott of the Smithsonian says, “The historical legacy of Juneteenth shows the value of never giving up hope in uncertain times.” May we carry that spirit forward, today and every day.

Meet Kim, an outstanding LVT here at Animal Surgical Center—known just as much for her funky hairstyles and upbeat attitude as she is for her incredible work ethic and compassion. 💜🐾

A Mercy University graduate with a B.S. in Veterinary Technology, Kim has worn many hats in vet med—from general practice to emergency care. Now, she’s diving into the surgical side, where she loves how fast-paced and skill-building each day can be.

One of her proudest moments? Assisting in the delivery of two healthy puppies from a Frenchie having difficulty giving birth—an intense but unforgettable experience! 🐶

Kim is passionate about being a voice for animals and supporting the pet parents who love them. Aside from her hard work towards one day becoming a veterinarian and business owner, Kim strives to surround herself with good company and live life to fullest because it’s way too short not to.

We’re lucky to have you on our team, Kim! 💫

In veterinary medicine, we face long hours, emotional exhaustion, and the weight of caring deeply for every patient and client. Burnout, compassion fatigue, and even su***de are heartbreaking realities in our field.

This month—and every month—we want to remind you: your mental health matters so much.

Here are some ways to take care of yourself and support the people around you:

✅ Set boundaries and reevaluate your workload

✅  Make time for hobbies and activities that bring you joy

✅ Prioritize self-care, whatever that looks like for you

✅ Reach out to a colleague who may be struggling—sometimes a simple check-in can make a world of difference

✅ Show yourself and others compassion, especially in the face of mistakes

✅ Build a support system—family, friends, peers, or community resources

✅ Don't hesitate to seek therapy or counseling—there is no shame in asking for help

✅ Spread awareness and help break the stigma surrounding mental health—open conversations can save lives

✅ Most importantly, know that you are never alone

Check out —an organization dedicated to advocating for the mental health of veterinary professionals by offering vital support and resources. If you're struggling please reach out to someone. And if you notice someone else having a hard time, don’t hesitate to lend a hand.

There is hope, and there is help. As some of the most compassionate, loving, and dedicated professionals out there, we must take care of ourselves—and each other.

Did you know this week is Veterinary Receptionist Week? 🐾💙

We’re celebrating the hard work of our front desk heroes — the first smiling faces you see when you walk through our hospital doors. This week, we’re shining the spotlight on one of ASC’s friendliest faces: Elizabeth (aka Liz)!

Liz began her journey in human medicine, but her heart led her to animal care — and she hasn’t looked back since. She then she’s worked at practices from Long Island to Pittsburgh, before finding her way to ASC, where she finally found a place that shares her passion for putting animals first.

Now, Liz proudly calls ASC home. She feels supported every step of the way — from her fellow receptionists always ready to lend a hand, to doctors who are approachable, kind, and treat her like a peer.

What she values most? Being part of each pet’s story—from the family’s first worried phone call, to the anxiety-ridden surgery drop-off, to that beautiful moment when a family is reunited with their beloved companion at the end of a long day.

Liz’s passion for animals and dedication to our clients has driven her to journey from the front desk to behind the scenes in the treatment area! Liz is heading back to school to complete her prerequisites to enroll in the Veterinary Technician program at Suffolk County Community College next fall.

We can't wait to see her thrive in this next chapter. Let’s show Liz and our entire team of Veterinary Receptionist’s some love and appreciation, because we couldn’t do what we do without them!

02/24/2025

There is a major lack of diversity in veterinary medicine, in fact it remains one of the least racially and ethnically diverse fields. This lack of representation can be attributed to many barriers—limited exposure to Black veterinary professionals, systemic inequities that make pet care inaccessible in lower-income communities, and the financial and educational hurdles of pursuing veterinary school, including unpaid clinical internships.

Diversifying veterinary medicine is crucial. How can kids confidently dream of becoming veterinarians when they have never seen one who looks like them? A more inclusive veterinary community ensures that Black pet owners and their beloved animals aren’t overlooked, that they receive the care and attention they deserve. It also benefits the field as a whole—bringing fresh perspectives, innovation, creativity, and deeper cultural understanding to pet care.

When Black professionals have a seat at the table, we ensure that veterinary advancements are shaped through multiple lenses and that every child, no matter their background, can see a future for themselves in this field.

Thank you Black veterinary professionals and happy Black History Month ❤️
