We stand together. ✊🏻

When the heaviness of the day hits you when you wake and you know that it may get harder to carry as the day goes on.
Know that we are carrying it with you.

When night time comes and you find yourself standing more than lying, your eyes are opened more than closed.
Know that we are standing with you.

When your body aches from moving, wanting desperately to rest, when there is no diagnosis other than extreme sleep deprivation.
Know that we are aching with you.

When the tears start falling because there are more questions left unanswered, and the pressure needs releasing, a way to cleanse, surrender and find your strength again.
Know that we are crying with you.

When the only answer you can find is simplifying life, more cuddling, baking and playing.
Know that we are simplifying with you.

When you know deep in your bones that this challenge of motherhood is also the most rewarding with so much privilege and joy.
Know that we feel this with you.

We are mothers. Although alone, we are in this together.

Personally speaking, as part of several diverse maternity care models for 40 years --- working alongside doula's in home, hospital and birth centers, I am surprised by how much public misunderstanding exists around role confusion. A FB post yesterday by a Registered Nurse validated need to increase awareness.

Why? Because nearly daily there is media attention focusing on ONE or the other, vs BOTH roles contributing to improved birth outcomes.

BOTH Midwives and Doulas have decades of rigorous research that demonstrate improved outcomes and high satisfaction by families.

This infographic is our attempt to describe roles. When speaking with influencers and legislators it is critical to articulate the unique roles.

Wait for it………………..

🌟delayed cord clamping benefits the health of mom and baby

✨✨ The World Health Organization recommends clamping the cord between 1 and 3 minutes

🥴🥴🥴ACOG only recommends waiting 30-60 seconds to clamp and cut the cord

In my practice I wait until the cord has changed color from blue to white and has stopped pulsating completely before I clamp and ask Dad to cut the cord.

Delayed cord clamping allows more blood to transfer from the placenta to the baby. This has many health benefits for both mama and baby.

The only downside of delayed cord clamping is the potential for increased jaundice in the newborn due to the higher amount of red blood cells that then break down into bilirubin. I have not seen this be an issue I’m my practice.

✨✨✨Wait for White to clamp and cut that cord!✨✨✨

Beautifully written.

Everyone deserves a a birth where they walk away from it feeling respected and empowered even if it does not go according to plan.

"The hormones you release when you nurse help you relax... and they make you sleepy. It's another hormonal synchrony between the two of you that encourages rest and relaxation. Those who advise "Don't let the baby fall asleep at your breast" are fighting nature on both ends -- your baby's and yours -- with no research at all to support them." From "Sweet Sleep: Nighttime and Naptime Strategies for the Breastfeeding Family"

This is you, and I know what you see. You see a soft middle, a round belly. You see too wide hips and your favourite jeans that don't do up. You see messy hair and tired eyes.
This is you, and here's what I see. A woman who held the universe in her womb, told by society she should be ashamed of it. I see strength and power to hold that growing and changing body and I see a new woman has recently emerged, a Mother. I see a woman who will not bounce back or go back to what she once was. She is so different now in so many much more beautiful ways.
This is you, and I know what your baby sees. Your baby sees perfection, ecstasy, joy, life, peace, love. Your baby sees home. Your baby sees you.

Have you worried that your newborn fell asleep hungry after breastfeeding?
"When a baby is hungry, he tends to clench his fists tightly and bring them toward his face. If he falls asleep hungry, his fists usually stay clenched. But when he gets milk, he relaxes starting with his face. Then his shoulders relax, and finally those fists unclench. Eventually they're as limp as the rest of him. Think of his hands as a built-in fuel gauge." -- La Leche League's Womanly Art of Breastfeeding, 8th edition

This rule should be used for healthy, full-term newborns. If your newborn is listless and difficult to wake, consulting with your healthcare provider to rule out extenuating circumstances is recommended.

Sometimes the fee for a private practice lactation consultant is out of pocket. Sometimes it's hard to justify that cost when you have the chance to see someone for free at the hospital or perhaps forego seeing someone at all. Here are some reasons why you should consider hiring a private practice IBCLC. 👩🏼‍⚕️
