New research shows moderately high cholesterol levels are linked to extreme longevity.

This upends what scientists previously thought about cholesterol.

For decades, "bad" cholesterol (LDL) has been cast as the primary villain of heart health, with standard advice being "the lower, the better." However, groundbreaking research in long-lived communities like Sardinia is turning this narrative on its head with what scientists call a "cholesterol paradox."

Data from these populations show that older individuals with moderately higher LDL levels—around 130 mg/dL or more—frequently live longer than those with lower readings. Rather than being purely harmful, LDL appears to serve as a crucial biological reserve in the elderly, supporting vital immune functions, hormone production, and cell repair as the body ages.

This discovery marks a significant shift toward personalized medicine, moving away from one-size-fits-all health targets. While managing cholesterol remains essential for younger adults, aggressive lowering treatments in the elderly may need a re-evaluation, as these fats provide stability and energy for aging systems. Doctors are now emphasizing a more holistic view, considering genetics and inflammation markers rather than just a single number on a lab report. Ultimately, for those in their golden years, maintaining moderate cholesterol levels might not be a risk factor, but a biological key to reaching the age of ninety and beyond.

Why am I so fatigued ?
This is a common question we get from many patients and new research has uncovered the reason. It comes down to oxygen! When we breathe oxygen is taken in from the lungs and distributed through small sacs into the blood stream attached to red blood cells. It starts out in the arteries and then to smaller and smaller vessels until it has to travel through such small vessels that they are thinner than a human hair. This is where the issue arises. Covid and other viruses attack the endothelium which is the inner most layer of a blood vessel. This causes inflammation and small microclots mostly made of a twisted fibrin matrix to flow through the blood stream and block those thin vessels causing a depletion of oxygen to the cells where it is supposed to be deposited. When you place a pulse oximeter on the end of your finger it may read 97-99% but that is in larger vessels and not the small thin vessels. So it’s like your gas tank is full but there a blockage in the filter so the engine doesn’t get enough fuel even though the tank is full. Adding more fuel doesn’t fix the problem. The smallest blood vessels are in the brain and eyes and that’s why so many people complain of brain fog and blurry vision as well as fatigue. There are medications that may help but the safest and most effective means of cleaning the microclots out of the blood stream would be EBOO Therapy or plasma apheresis.

Did you know how butter got its name?
It’s from butyric acid which is found in butter and is a small 4 carbon fatty acid necessary for energy production in the colon. Butter is very good for you and should be used on many foods and as a cooking oil. Don’t believe the TV ads !!!
