Earth Day Volunteers - Kettle Moraine High School students joined our residents for a wonderful Earth Day craft activity, assisting them in choosing colors, patterns, and designs for flower pots and birdhouses. A total of 23 students participated, creating a meaningful intergenerational experience filled with shared stories, laughter, and connection. Their presence truly enriched the lives of our residents and made the day both memorable and uplifting.

Volunteers Honored for a Legacy of Care
75 years before, a group of women from area churches answered the call to assist at a local nursing home. November, 1951 their first meeting took place, organizing into the Shorehaven Service League, and operating on a balance of $26.85. They set to work stuffing mattresses, rendering lard, painting and varnishing floors, canning jelly and applesauce for residents, planting gardens and providing lilacs and lilies for landscaping the grounds. They organized bake and craft sales, made fancywork and aprons, took residents on strolls and “spread joy and blessings” throughout the facilities, said past president Sharon Manke.

75 years later that joy is still shared at Shorehaven, and Kris Gallert, manager of volunteer services, thanked the 100 plus volunteers gathered at Rockwell’s Restaurant Apr. 28 during the organization’s annual volunteer appreciation brunch. “75 years is more than just a number,” Gallert told volunteers. “It represents generations of kindness, compassion, and unwavering dedication. It tells the story of countless individuals who chose to give their time, their energy, and most importantly, their hearts to others.”

The Service League also presented a check for $13,000 to the Shorehaven Charitable Foundation to help offset cost of services to seniors. “From the residents, families, and staff of Shorehaven, I thank each and every one of you for the impact you make, but also for continuing this special volunteer legacy,” Gallert concluded.

Insights from Chef Mike S. of Rockwell's Restaurant: For me, aside from Mother’s Day and garden planting, May marks the time of year when edible mushroom start popping up in the woods around southeast Wisconsin, Morels specifically. When the ground temperatures reach around 50 degrees and the south facing slopes start receiving sunshine after rain, people will begin the yearly foraging trips to hopefully bring home a basket or bucket of the springtime delicacies. Even if you can’t get out in the woods yourself, you can often find fresh mushrooms in farmers markets and specialty stores, but usually only for a small period of time, then they are gone for another year.
Attached is a recipe for a simple Wild Mushroom Soup, which is adaptable to whatever type of mushrooms you have access to. Home made soup may not be what you would typically think of for May, but when you incorporate wild mushrooms it becomes a one of a kind flavor that for me very much speaks to the culinary spirit of May.

Creamy Wild Mushroom Soup
• 3 tablespoons butter
• 4 leeks
• 5 cloves garlic minced
• 1 1/2 pounds mixed wild mushrooms sliced (any variety)
• 2 teaspoons fresh chopped thyme
• 4 cups chicken stock or vegetable stock
• 1 cup dry white wine
• 1/3 cup dry sherry
• 1 1/4 cup heavy cream
• Salt and pepper

1. Trim the green ends off the leeks. Cut the white ends lengthwise into quarters and thoroughly wash… leeks can be sandy. Then chop the leeks into small pieces. Place a large saucepot over medium heat and add the butter. Once the butter has melted add the leek and garlic. Saute for 3-5 minutes, then scoop over and set aside.
2. Add the mushrooms and thyme. Saute the mushrooms until the moisture has released and evaporated, 10 minutes. Then scoop 3/4 of the mushrooms out and set aside. Add the leeks back to the pot.
3. Pour in the stock, wine and sherry. Bring to a boil, then lower the heat. Simmer for 15 minutes. Puree the soup using an immersion blender. Then add the remaining mushrooms back to the pot. Stir in the cream and season with salt and pepper to taste.

If you prefer your soup to be thicker, whisk together a small amount of corn starch and water and slowly add to the soup while stirring vigorously.

The first days of May feel a little different.
A little brighter. A little softer.
Like everything is waking up again.

Hope you find a moment to step outside and take it in today. 🌿

There’s something special about days like this.

A note from Meadowview instructor Mary Stuckey: Students at Meadow View Elementary worked hard at making May Day baskets for the Shorehaven residents. First and second graders made the baskets and third and fourth graders made all the bright flowers for the baskets. It was a great way for our students to spread some sunshine to other members in our community. Thanks for letting us help!

More than 100 Lake Terrace interest list members toured newly remodeled independent living apartments last week in an open house setting launching from the Clubhouse. Several apartments were showcased, ranging from 739 to 1,460 square feet. Participants savored Dough Nation donuts, chatted with peers, and pictured themselves living on campus. Lake Terrace interest list members receive three special events annually. To join the list, email Jaime J. at jjaeger@lho.org or call 262 560-6919 and find your place on our shores.
