Happy 250th birthday, powder horn!

It’s not often we know the precise day that an item in the museum collections was made, but in the case of this powder horn, it has inscribed on it, “Made the 6th of September AD 1775”. Designed to hold black powder used to fire a lead ball from a musket, this powder horn was made by Captain Thomas Kempton at the encampment at Roxbury, then outside of Boston, Massachusetts, during the American siege of that British-held city.

To learn more about Kempton’s powder horn and see more of the vivid scenes depicted on the piece, check out the Collections Corner video presented by our museum collections and operations manager, Paul Newman: https://www.americanrevolutioninstitute.org/video/thomas-kempton-powder-horn/

We often talk about our kits, but not the history that makes them special.
To change that, we will occasionally feature a historical figure and what makes them stand out. Please tell us in the comments who you'd like to see featured next.

Daniel Morgan was a formidable opponent, hated by the British and even questioned by General Washington due to his unconventional tactics. Morgan’s Riflemen excelled in guerrilla warfare and executed hit and run tactics that disrupted British supply lines.

At times on the battlefield, they would specifically target British officers who believed they were out of reach due to the muskets being used at the time. However, Morgan's Riflemen carried rifled flintlocks, like the Pennsylvania or Kentucky Longrifle, that reportedly reached up to 300 yards. Our Colonial was built as a homage to those and similar flintlocks.

One of Morgan’s most notable victories came at the Battle of Cowpens in January 1781. Outnumbered and facing seasoned British troops, Morgan used a double envelopment tactic, drawing the enemy in with a staged retreat before surrounding and overwhelming them.
It was a turning point that lifted American spirits and dealt a serious blow to British advances in the South.

Born on July 6, 1736, Morgan passed away on his birthday in 1802.
