Here's a short informative video on how the medication semaglutide (Ozempic and Wegovy are identical) works in weight loss and obesity. Other drugs in the same class include dulaglutide (Trulicity) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro). All of these medications were originally approved to treat diabetes but have been found to promote weight loss in obesity. The medications are administered weekly with an injection, usually on the abdomen.

This class of medications seem to work very well for weight loss; however the cost can be prohibitive especially for use in obesity. A month's supply of these medications can be over $1000. If you have diabetes, the cost usually is much lower. In addition, due to the current demand, supply is very limited.

We are able provided generic compounded semaglutide/B12 combination for use in obesity; the medication is compounded and dispensed by a pharmacy in Houston. The cost is typically between $100-200 monthly, Visit johngarciamd.com for more information!

The semaglutide injections have grown in popularity as a mechanism to help with weight loss for type 2 diabetes and obesity diagnoses.

10/14/2022

We are excited to be able to provide compounded semaglutide (Ozempic) prescriptions through association with Empower Pharmacy.
Empower Pharmacy is located in Houston and will ship medications to your home after payment is made via credit or debit card.

Semaglutide is a once weekly injectable medication that belongs to the GLP-1 agonist class of medications. They were developed for diabetes but have been shown to be safe and effective for weight loss. Doses are titrated upward to minimize common gastrointestinal side effects.

We now have the Inbody 570 Body Composition Analyzer! This machine will perform a whole body analysis in about one minute, and gives us and you valuable insights into you body composition. It is able to measure dry lean mass (muscle and bone), body fat mass, and skeletal muscle mass.
It will also measure skeletal mass in each limb (right leg, left leg, right arm, left arm) and trunk and compares those measurements to averages. This assists you in focusing on certain parts of your body that may need increases in muscle mass.
It is best to get these studies done routinely if you are involved in a weight loss program. You can get them every 1-2 weeks if you desire to monitor your progress.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorized a second booster dose of either the Pfizer or the Moderna COVID-19 vaccines for individuals 50 years and older and certain immunocompromised individuals. Following this, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has updated its clinical recommendations to include the following:

A second booster dose of the Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine may be administered to individuals 50 years of age and older at least 4 months after receipt of a first booster dose of any authorized or approved COVID-19 vaccine.
A second booster dose of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine may be administered to certain immunocompromised individuals (see below) 12 years of age and older at least 4 months after receipt of a first booster dose of any authorized or approved COVID-19 vaccine.
A second booster dose of the Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine may be administered to certain immunocompromised individuals 18 years of age and older at least 4 months after the first booster dose of any authorized or approved COVID-19 vaccine.
In addition, adults who received a primary vaccine and booster dose of Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen COVID-19 vaccine at least 4 months ago may now receive a second booster dose using an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine.
Immunocompromised individuals include people with a range of conditions, such as recipients of organ or stem cell transplants, people with advanced or untreated HIV infection, recipients of active treatment for cancer, people who are taking some medications that weaken the immune system, and others. A full list of conditions can be found on CDC’s website: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/recommendations/immuno.html.

Here is an insightful study published a few days ago in JAMA online. The study involved health care workers at an tertiary (referral) center in Belgium

Patients who received two doses of the Moderna vaccine had higher antibody titers than those who received two doses of the Pfizer. Here is an excerpt from the article:

Higher antibody titers were observed in participants vaccinated with 2 doses of mRNA-1273 compared with those vaccinated with BNT162b2 (geometric mean titer [GMT], 3836 U/mL [95% CI, 3586-4104] vs 1444 U/mL [95% CI, 1350-1544]; P < .001) (Figure, A).

Previously infected participants had higher antibody titers (GMT, 9461 U/mL [95% CI, 8494-10 539]) compared with previously uninfected participants (GMT, 1613 U/mL [95% CI, 1539-1690]) (P < .001). In both groups, those vaccinated with mRNA-1273 had higher antibody titers compared with those vaccinated with BNT162b2 (previously uninfected: GMT, 2881 U/mL [95% CI, 2721-3051] vs 1108 U/mL [95% CI, 1049-1170]; P < .001; previously infected: GMT, 10 708 U/mL [95% CI, 9311-12 315] vs 8174 U/mL [95% CI, 6923-9649]; P = .01). The difference in antibody levels according to previous infection was higher than the difference between the 2 mRNA vaccines

We offer outpatient treatment protocols for COVID-19 infection in addition to outpatient testing. I have tried to research as much as possible the use of certain medications that offer benefit and lessen the severity and length of infection.

Some of you have had questions re: the use of Ivermection for COVID -19 infection. We have seen beneficial effects in the care of several patients over the past few weeks. I have attached the link to a study that examines the use of ivermectin in COVD-19 infection.

We will be updating our website johngarciamd.com soon with information you may find helpful.

08/22/2021

We will be scheduling 3rd dose boosters for those of you who received the Moderna vaccine this past year.

Ideally, we would like to schedule 10-20 patients at a time during an afternoon session. Call 582-0300 to get on the list so we can get you vaccinated.

We currently don’t have Pfizer vaccine in but will be looking into ordering it this week.

If you have recovered from COVID-19 and would like to be vaccinated, give us a call and we can guide you in the process. The common misconception is you have to wait 90 days after recovery, but that is not the case. When you have recovered fully, you can start your vaccinations.

Currently boosters for Johnson&Johnson vaccines are not recommended, but that will probably change.

Call 582-0300 to schedule or with any questions.

08/19/2021

We have a limited supply of Johnson & Johnson vaccines. We would like to administer as many as possible in a half day session in the near future. Please call 582-0300 for further information. There is no cost for the vaccine.

We have over 100 doses of the Moderna vaccine as well, and can schedule some patients if we can get at least 10 at a time. It's
a two dose vaccine with the second dose 4 weeks later.
