A big THANKS to all of those who attended and helped put together the latest FENT (Facing Emergency Narcotics in Texas) class Mission Fitness. We had 18 people attend the class this past Monday! 👏👏

ECHD Board Member Don Hallmark shared the story of his son, Zane, who sadly passed away due to fentanyl. Don, MCH Trauma Services, and Odessa Teen Court present this program as they aim to combat the drug issue in our community through this course to educate and inform young teens of the dangers and risks behind va**ng, opioids, including fentanyl, as well as the reality of overdoses. Each participant also learned how to administer Narcan and it's significance on saving someone's life during an overdose.

If you would like to schedule a FENT class in your area or your place of business, please reach out to Jessica Aguilar with MCH Trauma Services at jaguilar1@echd.org.

Dancing with West Texas Stars 2024 was a success for our very own Russell Tippin and his partner, Helen Pasternak. They took home “Most Entertaining” for their rendition of the ending of the movie “Dirty Dancing!” Russell even surprised his wife Lisa, pulling her out of the crowd to finish off the routine! 🕺 💃

You may also notice Russell has a bit of a new hairstyle. After the performance, he shaved his head in honor of his mother Patsy, who is currently battling uterine/endometrial cancer and dedicated his performance to her. 🙏 🙏

THANK YOU to the Crisis Center of West Texas for an amazing night! 💙🧡

01/12/2024

“We are beyond grateful of the continued support from the leadership of the city of Odessa,” said Alison Pradon, President, MCHS Foundation & Vice President of Development, Medical Center Health System. “This money will go directly to the support of the PBBHC and it’s mission to make mental health a priority in the Permian Basin, which is a massive need in our area.”

A big THANKS to City of Odessa, Texas as the City Council voted unanimously on Tuesday, January 9, to award Medical Center Health System $1 million from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds they received. The Medical Center Health System Foundation will allocate the money to directly support the future Permian Basin Behavioral Health Center.

The Permian Basin Behavioral Health Center is a mental health facility that will provide inpatient and outpatient mental health services to help individuals of all ages overcome their challenges. This exciting partnership between Midland County Hospital District and Ector County Hospital District marks the start of a new chapter in the future of behavioral health in the Permian Basin.

The PBBHC is scheduled to open in late 2025 and will be located just south of the Wagner Noel Performing Arts Center on FM 1788 and Highway 191.

“We are truly appreciative of the consistent support we’ve received from the city of Odessa and its leadership. This money will directly help us open and operate a free diabetes clinic – a chronic disease that affects many within our community and requires constant monitoring and treatment that can normally be expensive," said Russell Tippin, CEO/President, Medical Center Health System.

Thanks to the City of Odessa's for awarding us $500,000 from ARPA Funds to open and operate a FREE DIABETES CLINIC at the former Urgent Care location on 42nd St. When opened, the clinic will have varied hours and days to accommodate different patients' schedules and is for low-income or non-insured diabetes patients, 18 years of age or older.

Please monitor our social media pages, as well as the City of Odessa, Texas pages for updates when the clinic will open.

Odessa Mayor and City Council Funding Free Diabetes Clinic

Another priority for our local leaders is making sure there’s healthcare available, especially for those most in need. They unanimously voted to designate $500,000 in ARPA funds (federal funds) for a FREE Diabetes clinic.

“Some patients can’t even afford those low-cost clinics,” said Russell Tippin, Medical Center Health System President/CEO.

“One of the things that makes me proud to be a part of this Council is how we are always looking to improve the lives of the citizens. This partnership between MCH and the city will provide an invaluable service to those who lack adequate healthcare,” said Mark Matta, Odessa City Council Member.

Medical Center Hospital System has a clinic on 42nd near Permian High School that was shut down during COVID. It’s the former MCH Urgent Care at 1940 E. 42nd. The City’s plan is, in partnership with MCHS, to use this funding to open it back up.

“What I like about it, is that it’s ready to go. We don’t have to order equipment six or seven months out. We can flip the switch on this in a couple of weeks and have this going,” said Tippin.

There are nine rooms in the clinic for patients. In the beginning, it will only be open a limited number of days a week with limited hours.

It hits close to home for Mayor Javier Joven. He’s faced his own set of health challenges as a Cancer survivor and Diabetic. He strongly believes there’s a need for education, especially in the areas of diabetes, hypertension, and high blood pressure.

“I’m committed to improving the knowledge in pre-diagnosis in these areas for the segment of our citizens in Odessa who have limited access or no access to pre-treatment. This clinic will fill this gap locally,” said Mayor Joven.

Another benefit to this clinic, it’s not only there to help patients but also to train up-and-coming doctors. Licensed physicians, training residents, and medical students will be working in the diabetes clinic. MCHS also pointed out that there are a lot of patients who use emergency rooms for primary healthcare, instead of emergencies. The hope is the clinic will help alleviate that problem as well.

If you’re not familiar with ARPA funds, that stands for the American Rescue Plan Act money.

Please monitor the City of Odessa and Medical Center Health System social media pages for updates on when the clinic will open.
