๐Ÿš›๐Ÿ’Š Medication Review During DOT Exams

During a DOT physical, ALL medications must be reviewed โ€” including:
โœ”๏ธ Prescription medications
โœ”๏ธ Over-the-counter medications
โœ”๏ธ Herbal remedies
โœ”๏ธ Supplements

To help your exam go smoothly, drivers should bring:

๐Ÿ“‹ A current list of all medications, including:
โ€ข Name of medication
โ€ข Dosage amount
โ€ข Frequency taken

๐Ÿ“„ Prescriber documentation when applicable

โš ๏ธ Controlled substances will be discussed in greater detail in another post, but here are the basics:
โ€ข Schedule I drugs are prohibited
โ€ข Schedule IIโ€“V medications are restricted
โ€ข A valid prescription and medical clearance may be required confirming the medication does not affect safe driving

Some medications require additional confirmation from your medical provider to ensure they do not impair your ability to safely operate a commercial vehicle.

Being prepared helps avoid delays in your certification process and keeps you safely on the road. โœ…

๐Ÿš› NEW VIDEO FOR CDL DRIVERS ๐Ÿš›

A lot of drivers think the DOT urinalysis is a drug testโ€”but thatโ€™s actually not what itโ€™s for.

In this new video, Dr. Kler from Luxe Spine Center explains:
โœ… What the DOT urinalysis actually screens for
โœ… Why protein, blood, sugar, and specific gravity matter
โœ… How glucose in the urine can affect your certification
โœ… Why drug testing is separate from the DOT physical
โœ… How a one-stop clinic can simplify the entire process

If youโ€™re a commercial driver in the Tampa area, this is information you should know before your next DOT physical.

๐Ÿš› What Does a DOT Urinalysis Screen For? ๐Ÿš›

If youโ€™re a commercial driver, your DOT physical includes a required urinalysisโ€”but it might not be what you think.

Hereโ€™s what we actually check during the exam:

๐Ÿงช Protein
May indicate kidney issues or underlying medical conditions.

๐Ÿฉธ Blood
Could be a sign of infection, kidney stones, or other concerns that may need follow-up.

๐Ÿฌ Sugar (Glucose)
High levels can be a warning sign for diabetes.

๐Ÿ’ง Specific Gravity
Measures how concentrated your urine isโ€”this helps assess hydration and kidney function.

๐Ÿ’ก Important to Know:
The DOT urinalysis is NOT a drug test. It is strictly used to screen for underlying health conditions that could impact your ability to drive safely.

However, drug screening may still be required by your employer or as part of a separate DOT-regulated testing program.

To keep things simple, make sure you schedule a DOT physical with a provider that is able to perform the DOT physical, urinalysis and drug screening simultaneously. This way you will only have to provide a urine sample one time all in one house.

Keeping you healthy and compliant is our top priorityโ€”on and off the road. We provide DOT physicals, urinalysis and drug screening all in one house.

๐Ÿš› Temporary DOT Medical Certificates: What They Mean

If youโ€™re a CDL driver in the Tampa Bay area and received a temporary DOT medical certificate, you might be wondering what it means for your ability to stay on the road.

A temporary (short-term) DOT medical card is issued when a driver is currently qualified, but the medical examiner needs additional information or short-term follow-up before issuing a full certification period.

Common reasons include:
โœ” Monitoring high blood pressure
โœ” Waiting for lab results or specialist reports
โœ” Needing documentation from your primary care provider
โœ” A condition that requires short-term follow-up

โš ๏ธ Important: A temporary certificate does allow you to drive, but only until the expiration date on the card. Before that date, you must return with the requested information so the examiner can determine if a longer certification period can be issued. Please note a new DOT Physical and certificate will be required upon expiration of the old certificate.

โœ… Tips for drivers:
โ€ข Donโ€™t wait until the last minute to gather paperwork
โ€ข Bring test results or physician notes to your follow-up visit
โ€ข Schedule your return appointment early to avoid a lapse in certification

Our goal is to help Tampa Bay truck drivers stay compliant, healthy, and on the road while meeting FMCSA medical standards.

As a DOT Medical Examiner, one of the most common questions I hear is:

โ€œWhy did I only get a 1-year (or shorter) card instead of 2 years?โ€

Hereโ€™s how it works ๐Ÿ‘‡

A full DOT medical certificate can be issued for up to 24 months โ€” but only if you meet all medical standards without conditions that require monitoring.

Many drivers are surprised to learn that certain common health conditions automatically require shorter certification periods for safety and monitoring

๐ŸŸข You may qualify for a 2-year card if:
- Your blood pressure is under 140/90 without medication
- You have no chronic medical conditions requiring monitoring
- You meet all vision, hearing, and physical standards

๐ŸŸก A 1-year card is very common if you have:
- High blood pressure (even if controlled with medication)
- Diabetes (non-insulin treated)
- Sleep apnea (with CPAP compliance)
- A history of heart disease
- Certain medications that require follow-up
- Other conditions that require the examiner to check on you yearly

๐Ÿ”ด Cards shorter than 1 year (3โ€“12 months) may be issued when:
- A condition is newly diagnosed
- Blood pressure is elevated at the exam
- You are waiting on specialist clearance
- There are concerns that require recheck before a longer card is safe

This is not a punishment and itโ€™s not personal.

Itโ€™s about:
โœ”๏ธ Your safety
โœ”๏ธ Public safety
โœ”๏ธ Making sure medical conditions stay well-controlled while youโ€™re on the road

Remember: A shorter card today can often turn into a longer card next visit when conditions are well managed.

Tip for drivers: Bring documentation from your doctor, CPAP reports, medication lists, surgery lists, and any specialist clearances to your exam. This can help avoid unnecessary delays or shorter cards.

Stay safe out there โ€” and take care of your health like you take care of your truck. Your livelihood depends on both.
