Family Services Funeral Parlor was opened in 2002 after Victor Woods, Jr. decided he could offer his hometown community much better service at a much better price than the existing “big corporation” owned funeral home. He and his mother, Kay Woods Judd, started the business together and for several years were the only full time employees. In 2003, Vic met and married another longtime Kermit/Odessa

resident, Amy Hudson Woods. As they began to consider growth opportunities for the business, Amy encouraged them to consider West Odessa – an area sorely in need of a funeral service provider. They found a home on West University and started discussing a possible name for the new location. The name “Acres West” was a top contender as it seemed to capture the spirit of the West Odessa area – an area populated by independent minded folk who often have livestock on their property and boots by their front doors. The name was clinched when at closing on the property it was discovered that the subdivision was named “Westover Acres.” It was a God thing. In order to successfully operate two locations, Vic and Kay needed some full time help. In exchange for going to school, getting licensed, and helping to build the business from the ground up – they gave shares in the business to a local friend and Amy’s brother, John Hudson. The summer of 2005, while these two were at school, Kay and Vic enlisted the help of Vic’s father-in-law (John and Amy’s father – Jerald Hudson) and Kay’s husband in remodeling and adding on to the small home on West University, slowly turning it into the comfortable and spacious funeral home you see today. Officially opening the doors in November of 2005, Acres West began a quest to offer the community a more homelike, relaxed atmosphere where the families served are our number one priority. Some staff has married in, and some longtime employees we have adopted in that we cannot imagine being without. We have also seen a couple of shareholders go on their own way due to divorce and differences of opinion on the directions in which the company should go. However, Vic remains in Odessa as the anchor that holds it all together and John is a permanent fixture at the Kermit location. Although still a work in progress, continually expanding and adding on to better serve the Permian Basin, they are proud to still be the only funeral home in Odessa continually operated by a family born and raised in the Permian Basin and proud to still be residents of Odessa and Kermit. Acres West Funeral Chapel is the only funeral home in Odessa where the same person is likely to greet you at the door, help you with your funeral planning, and fix the plumbing when it goes out! Antonia V. Hernandez, a cherished mother, sister, and aunt, passed away peacefully on July 29, 2025, in Odessa, Texas, at the age of 72. Born on February 24, 1953, in Palomas, Mexico, to Tomas Hernandez and Christina Valenzuela, Antonia lived a life marked by love, courage, and thoughtfulness.

Antonia, affectionately known by all as simply Antonia, brought warmth and joy to those around her. She dedicated over twenty years of her life to her career as a housekeeper, working in both hotels and private homes. Her strong work ethic and the pride she took in her work left a lasting impression on everyone she served.

A woman of vibrant tastes and passions, Antonia adored the color purple and had a deep appreciation for the beauty of roses. She found pleasure in the dramatic twists of telenovelas and cherished the opportunity to travel back to her native Mexico whenever she could. Antonia's love for Italian food often found her at Olive Garden, enjoying a meal with family or friends, though she could never resist the comfort of Mexican foods, especially her beloved gorditas.

Antonia's enthusiasm extended to her favorite sports team, the Dallas Cowboys, cheering them on with the same fervor she applied to every aspect of her life. This served as a link to her son, Anibal, even after his passing. Music filled her home, with the sounds of mariachi and norteño music reflecting her rich cultural heritage and her love for life's simple joys.

Although she faced the loss of her beloved son, Anibal Hernandez, and was preceded in death by her mother, Christina, and brothers, Albino and Eliazar Hernandez, Antonia's legacy of love and resilience lives on. She is survived by her father, Tomas Hernandez; her brother, Oscar Hernandez (his wife, Juana) and their family, and her sisters, Ramona Garcia (her husband, Jesus) and Olga Deras (her husband, Jose), along with their families. Antonia's spirit will also be carried forward by numerous nieces and nephews, who saw in her the embodiment of a loving and courageous soul.

Antonia's life was a testament to her thoughtful nature and her ability to find beauty in everyday moments. As we say goodbye to this remarkable woman, we take solace in the countless memories she leaves behind, a tapestry of moments filled with laughter, kindness, and love.

The void left by Antonia's departure will be deeply felt by all who knew her, yet her influence will continue to guide and inspire those she touched. Her memory will be cherished and kept alive in the stories shared, the lessons taught, and the love she gave so freely.

As we bid farewell to Antonia V. Hernandez, we celebrate a life well-lived and honor the enduring impact of her presence among us. Her spirit, now free, remains a beacon of the values she held dear-love, courage, and thoughtfulness— legacy that will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of those she loved.

Manuela's spirit was as vibrant as the lands of her birth, and she carried the warmth of her heritage throughout her life. She was a woman whose laughter was both infectious and comforting, filling any room she entered and providing solace to those around her. Her sense of humor and quick wit never failed to bring smiles to faces, with one-liners that were as memorable as they were humorous.
Manuela's heart knew no bounds, and she embodied the purest form of giving. If she had it, she shared it—her home, her time, her love. She lived her life as an open book, never hesitating to strike up a conversation with a new acquaintance or to offer a helping hand to anyone in need. Her affectionate nature made her a cherished figure in her community, and her daily check-ins with loved ones were a cornerstone of her nurturing presence.

In the kitchen, Manuela's culinary skills shone, especially when it came to making tamales—a task she insisted on undertaking alone, ensuring every detail met her exacting standards.
Despite her strength and independence, Manuela's greatest legacy was her capacity to love.

Our Story

Family Services Funeral Parlor was opened in Kermit in 2002 after Victor Woods, Jr. decided he could offer his hometown community much better service at a much better price than the existing “big corporation” owned funeral home. He and his mother, Kay Woods Judd, started the business together and for several years were the only full time employees. In 2003, Vic met and married another longtime Kermit/Odessa resident, Amy Hudson Woods.
