Grandview residents and team members competed in a soup cook-off during lunch on September 30th. Team members asked residents to share a favorite soup recipe and assist in making the soup. Soups were judged by community members Linda and Buzz Rechkemmer, Linda Jensen and Marcia Wakefield. Wooden spoon trophies were handed out to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place teams. There were a total of 9 entries of various soups including a peanut butter soup which surprised everyone! The 1st place was a Lasagna soup team member Sierra and her grandfather Wade, 2nd place Becky and Mike P with White Chicken Chili and 3rd Kayleigh and Aaron with Chili.

This week, we learned about learned about the Monarch butterfly. Did you know?
1) The Monarch butterfly only lays eggs on the bottom of the milkweed leaf.
2) Caterpillars will grow 3000 times its size in 2 weeks and shed its skin 5 times before building its chrysalis.
3) 1st generation children of Monarchs fly from Mexico fly north to lay eggs from March to May.
4) 2nd generation Grandchildren born in the north lay eggs in the north May to June.
5) 3rd generation great-grandchildren born in north lay eggs in north June to July only live 2-6 weeks.
6) 4th generation Great-great grandchildren born in the north Migrate to Mexico live 5 months, are called the super generation and fly about 100 miles a day on the way to Mexico.
7) Iowa is in the migration pathway flying to Mexico and back north.

Join us in congratulating one of our own, Kendal Jensen, for being selected as the Oelwein Lions Club "Lion's Person of the Year!" She was presented with a certificate at the Party in the Park event last week for this prestigious recognition. Kendall has devoted 21+ years as a Certified Nurse Assistant at Grandview Healthcare Center in Oelwein and we are so thankful for her continued dedication to our residents and our home! Congratulations Kendall!

Fontana Park joined us again last week and presented a program on different types of birds found in Iowa. We all learned some interesting facts! Did you know:
1) That a group of crows is called a murder of crows primarily due to historical folklore associating them with death; A group of Ravens is called an unkindness due to their perceived connection with bad luck; and A group of magpies is called a mischief due to their notorious reputation for clever and sometimes disruptive behavior.
2) Hummingbirds can get drunk off the sugar water in the feeders if it is not changed daily. They are the only bird that can fly in every direction and eat every 5-10 minutes because they use so much energy flying.
3) Although male birds are more colorful than females to attract the females for mating is true the real reason is to draw predators away from the nest.
4) Gold finches are only yellow in the summer.

RAGBRAI stayed overnight in Oelwein this year and Grandview hosted a spot to camp to Team Sprint Selzer Bicycle Club again for the second time. We all enjoyed chatting with the cyclists about their trip this year. There were even 2 Green Bay Packer fans that talked football with one of our Packers fans after spying him wearing his Packer gear! Before departing on Saturday they had breakfast and said goodbye to some of their newly made friends at Grandview. We look forward to the next time we can host you and meet again!

Lynn and helpers from St. Croix Hospice brought Christmas in July to us with fun, holiday themed games for the residents and team members to participate in! First, was the Snowball throw where residents tossed snowballs into Santa's over-sized pants while other tried to deter the snowballs by hitting them away with giant candy canes. Lots of laughs were had! Then, there was Candy Cane Hockey where 2 teams of 4 tried to get the blue ball into their goal. We realized we have a lot of competitive residents living at Grandview, the pros better watch out if we join the circuit and hit the road! After all the games were done, we enjoyed snow cones and took fun photos in the photo booth! Big 'Thanks' to St. Croix Hospice for such a fun day!
