Bill M. Hughes

Bill Hughes, 91, of Chappell, passed away on July 26, 2025, in Julesburg, CO.

Bill was born on January 7, 1934, the 9th of nine children born to Harold and Nelle (Kernan) Hughes. He graduated from Sedgwick High School in 1951, and then attended Northeastern Junior College on an athletic scholarship, where he attended for one year, and then returned home to the Sedgwick area. During this time, Bill met his first love, Mary Anderberg. He also enlisted in the Navy, serving as a machinist mate 2nd class on a destroyer repair ship, stationed in San Diego, CA.

Bill and Mary were married in 1954, and they were stationed in CA, until Bill was reassigned to Guam, and Mary moved home to have their 1st child, Lynnelle. They would rejoin Bill on Guam after Lynnelle was born.

Affer Bill was discharged in 1957, they moved to the Chappell area and began farming with Mary's dad, Martin. Here they welcomed four more daughters, Beth, Karen, Joan, and Carolyn. After 37 years of marriage, Mary passed away in December of 1991.

In 1997, Bill found love a second time and married Mary Timm, and the family grew with her children, Gregory, Ryan, and Kristin. They spent the next 28 years together. Bill never met a stranger. He was committed to his family, his community, and his church, where he was often heard telling people, "Welcome to St. Joseph's."

He enjoyed all sports, but baseball was his true love. He was instrumental in starting the Buckely Bombers, during which time he influenced many players, including his own grandsons. If it was possible to be at a game, Bill was there.

Bill loved being Irish, or partly Irish, though he'd never admit it. The Irish Blessing was part of his everyday vernacular, and an Irish whiskey was certainly never turned down! If you spent any time in Bill's space, you'd have been "blessed" with "may the road rise to meet you," or "may the good Lord take a likin' to ya".

Having five daughters on a farm might seem like an unlikely situation, or at the very least, unproductive. But that certainly wasn't Bill's point of view. He taught them all to drive trucks, tractors, and be every bit as capable a farm hand, just like the boys down the road.

Bill was very involved in his community, including teaching faith formation classes at church, serving on the hospital board, the VFW & American Legion, where he was honored for his commitment to both organizations, the rural Fire Board, and Rotary, where he was a team leader to Brazil. Bill was an original member of the Buckley Trust, where he served as a trustee for 45 years, and was very proud of the work they were able to do in Chappell and the surrounding area.

Bill is survived by his wife, Mary, his daughters Lynnelle, Beth (Gary Cole), Karen (Claude Berreckman), Joan (Mike Hansen), Carolyn (Ted Fogarty), and his stepchildren Gregory (Emily), Ryan (Emily), and Kristin (Kendall Kroeger). He leaves behind 17 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, with one on the way, and many friends and family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Joe, Bob, Gerald, and Harold, his sisters Kathryn, Ruth, Betty, Shirley, and his wife Mary.

A memorial has been established in Bill's memory for later designation. Condolences may be shared at prairiehillsjulesburg.com, where the services will be streamed live.

Visitation will be on Monday, August 4, 2025, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Chappell, NE. Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. at the church on Monday.

Matt Greenwood

Matthew Vernon Greenwood, 62, of Grant, passed away on October 5, 2024, at the Perkins County Hospital.

Matt was born on March 17, 1962, in Florence, Oregon, to La Verne Otis Greenwood and Betty Carolyn Rayl. He was raised on the West Coast, where he attended Reedsport Union High School, and later moved to Billings, Montana, where he attended West Billings High School.

Matt pursued various educational paths and careers throughout his life. He earned his GED and an Associate's degree from Mid-Plains Community College in North Platte, where he studied Building Construction Technology, garnering a 4.0 GPA. He was proud to have Phi Theta Kappa honors and to have competed in Skills USA, once as a team in building completion, and then as an individual in plumbing and received the 2011 Skills USA Nebraska Collegiate Plumber Gold Medal, placing fourth in the nation.

In his professional life, Matthew ventured into the trucking industry, working for Northdale Oil, Inc., in North Dakota as a truck driver, hauling petroleum products and navigating complex cross-border logistics. He held a Class A CDL with tank and doubles/triples endorsement. He owned and operated a towing service out of Montana. He later worked for Scott and Linda Payne in Nebraska on the harvest crew, where he met Kurt Payne, a man he referred to as his second father, who ironically passed away the morning of the same day Matthew did.

Matt worked in the railroad industry in multiple roles, including as an Assistant Superintendent for Railroad Repair & Maintenance in Fort Worth, TX, and as a Section Foreman and Extra Board Engineer/Conductor for the Great Western Railway in Colorado, and as a Trainmaster, Roadmaster, and Engineer for Illinois RailNet in Ottawa, IL. His expertise was highly valued, and his work ranged from maintaining the right-of-way and infrastructure to overseeing budgets, crew staffing, and machinery maintenance for various railroads across the Plains and Southern United States. He was also a BNSF-qualified track inspector and locomotive engineer.

In 2004, Matt moved to Grant. Following the disbanding of Railroad Repair & Maintenance, he worked as an assistant manager at Kwik Stop. After earning his degree, he worked for Adams Lumber in Grant running the concrete plant. Despite his many career achievements and a term on the City Council, Matt faced personal challenges later in life, among which was a stent insertion, later followed in 2016 by a stroke, which left him partially paralyzed and significantly altered his life.

Matt loved spending time on his model train collection, which he took great pride in, and in promoting the rail modeling hobby. He was a former volunteer for Habitat for Humanity, where he assisted in building several homes, putting his carpentry background to good use.

Matt is survived by his fiancée, Carol Jacobs of Grant, his father, La Verne "Vern" Greenwood, of Grand Forks, ND, his sister, Colleen (Dave) Hainline of Brownsville, TX, her children Nicholas, Josie, and Daniel, his half-brother, Caleb Greenwood of Toledo, OR, Caleb's son Kyuss; and Matt's uncle, Ronald Greenwood of Reedsport, OR; Matt's cousin, Becky (Bryan) Mathany of Carson, WA and, her children Elena and Jack.

Graveside services will be held on Friday, July 25, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. at the Grant Fairview Cemetery with Father Thomas Bush officiating.

Donna Kucera

Donna (Pankonin) Kucera was born January 16, 1949, during the blizzard of '49, to her parents Alfred and Leora (Schoff) Pankonin. Donna graduated from Grant High School in 1967. She was married to Donald Lee Kucera until his passing on March 24, 2007. She resided at their home West of Grant until she had to be moved to Indian Hills Manor in Ogallala, where she passed on June 24, 2025.

Donna loved animals, they were her hobby and her livelihood. Donna was the leader of the 4-H Trail Riders Club for several years. Donna and Don were the Odds & Ends banner carriers at many local parades. She also took her smaller animals to many petting zoos in the area, and to nursing homes to brighten the days of many patients. Donna never had children of her own, but she was the one that bottle fed likely 1,000+ calves, lambs and goats! She loved attending livestock sales, and they knew her well and gave her many animals that no one else wanted...she would nurse them back to life if possible.

Donna's kind and joyful personality was a blessing to her friends and family. She had a hard life, missed her parents terribly, but seldom (if ever) complained.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Don Kucera, and her brother Dennis Pankonin.

She is survived by her friends; neighbors; nieces, Debra Arrick (Rick), Kerrie Conway (Kelley) and Amy Pankonin; her former sister-in-law, Nancy (Jim) Palmer of Brighton, Co.; Don’s children George (Kwei) Kucera of North Platte, Sharon (Doug) Tatum of Grant, and Stephanie Odvarka of Lincoln.

A Memorial service will be held at the Trinity Lutheran Church south of Ogallala on Friday, August 1, at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor John Dickmander officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. A reception will follow in the Trinity Lutheran Fellowship Hall. Online Condolences may be offered at www.prairiehillsfuneralhome.com.

Taffy Hastings

Taffy Sue Hastings, 71, of rural Ogallala, passed away Saturday, July 12, 2025, in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Taffy was born March 9, 1954, in Oshkosh, Nebraska, to Thomas and Doris (DeCou) Brown. She grew up in Lisco, and graduated from Oshkosh High School with the class of 1972.

Taffy pursued a career in nursing, attending Mid Plains Community College in North Platte in 1973, earning her LPN certification. Her nursing career began at St. Mary's Hospital in North Platte, followed by nearly 49 years at Perkins County Health Services in Grant. Taffy had a caregiver's spirit, which was evident in everything she did. As a patient, seeing Taffy in the halls at the hospital meant you were assured of excellent care with a warmth and genuineness that belong especially to small-town hospitals. Taffy helped countless people over the years, welcoming people into this life, and attending to their needs when life was winding to a close.

She was united in marriage with Victor Hastings in 1975, and they built their life together, raising three children outside of Ogallala. She was a devoted farm wife and mother with a fierce love for her God, her family, the land, and all that it produces. She was an avid vegetable gardener and enjoyed spending time in her flower garden. Above all, her greatest title was "Grandma". Taffy modeled God's love to her family with unconditional love and the kind of deep understanding that only comes when love is put into practice. She exemplified a servant's heart by offering help to anyone who needed it.

Taffy was a passionate Husker fan and especially loved supporting Husker volleyball. She was also fully immersed in quilting, and many of her wares were given away as gifts and reminders of her love.

Taffy is survived by her husband, Victor Hastings of rural Ogallala; her children, Tammy (Justin) Hutcheson of Elsie, Christy (Steve) Stone of Fairmont, Minnesota, and Travis Hastings of North Platte; grandchildren, Tomarcus and Asher Hutcheson; Isaac and Brooklyn Stone; her sister, Alice Johnston of Elgin; along with many other relatives and friends.
