This week in class, my students and I explored two fascinating concepts: Appositional Growth and Wolff's Law. Appositional growth is how our bones build new layers over time, while Wolff's Law teaches us that bone adapts to the demands placed upon it. Together, they paint a powerful picture of resilience: our bodies are designed to grow through challenge, not avoid it.
Revisiting these topics reminded me how closely physical resilience mirrors mental and professional resilience. Just as bone layers accumulate with consistent effort, so too do our skills, experiences, and strengths. And just as stress placed on bone shapes it for the future, the obstacles we face in work and life shape us into stronger leaders, teammates, and individuals.
It's a timely reminder, for myself and my students, that growth isn't instant. It's built, layer by layer.
