Join us in celebrating Patient Blood Management Awareness Week!
PBM Awareness Week is a time to raise awareness about the importance of managing and preserving a patient’s own blood. It promotes safe, evidence-based care that reduces unnecessary transfusions and improves outcomes across all healthcare settings.
At Intermountain Health, we're proud to be growing our Patient Blood Management program with three dedicated PBM coordinators leading the way. A key focus our coordinators will place on is anemia management. Early identification and treatment of anemia is essential to reduce transfusion needs, support recovery, and improve patient outcomes.
Getting older doesn’t mean giving up the things you love. 🏒 Trip Mitchell,
a lifelong hockey player, shares how an injury led to unexpected
friendships with his physical therapist — and how the Intermountain team
helped him reclaim his life, one stride at a time. 💪

🏃♀️💙 Hero on the Run 💙🏃♀️
While racing the Berlin Marathon, Intermountain caregiver Sam Hall, RN,
paused her own race to save a fellow runner’s life.
At mile 15, Sam saw a runner collapse. Without hesitation, she jumped into
action—checking for a pulse, calling for help, and performing CPR until
medics arrived.
“I kept thinking, ‘How do I leave this man?’” Sam said. She finished the
race far behind her goal time, but with a heart full of relief after learning
he survived. Sam’s also chasing another goal: becoming a “six-star finisher” by
completing all six World Major Marathons. Berlin was her fourth—next up,
Tokyo and London!
Her message? 🫀 Stay current on CPR training (check the link in our bio). You never know when you’ll need it.

In partnership with the Las Vegas Raiders, four brave cancer warriors from Intermountain Children's Health spent an epic day with the Raiders: meeting players and Raiderettes, playing games, and touring the Intermountain Health Performance Center. All four of these patients have traveled from Nevada to Utah for certain types of care.
Jade, Benji, Luna, and Colston have all battled extensive rounds of chemotherapy and other challenging treatments. These unforgettable moments are part of a powerful mission: bringing Nevada its first Children’s Hospital so families no longer have to travel out of state for lifesaving care.
Thank you, Las Vegas Raiders, for standing with our community and championing children’s health in Nevada.

We’re thrilled to celebrate Kristen Shobe, our wonderful Education Manager and a recent recipient of Intermountain Health's prestigious L.O.V.E. Award - “Living Our Values Every Day.” This honor recognizes individuals who go above and beyond to embody compassion, collaboration, and excellence in everything they do. Her leadership, heart, and dedication make a lasting impact every single day! It was exciting to have her family surprise her by popping in to celebrate with us!
"Kristen is an incredible leader who leads with empathy, compassion, and a true spirit of service. She brings our team together to work, celebrate, and have fun, and I always know I can count on her. One week, I was overwhelmed with simulation prep and unsure how I’d get directional signs made for caregivers—Kristen stepped in, made them at home, and had them ready the next morning. She consistently ensures every educator, whether in-house or in the community, has what they need to succeed. Her open-door policy and willingness to listen make a huge difference, and her understanding of life’s challenges helps me return to work feeling supported and empowered. She keeps us connected through team lunches, group texts, Kahuna sessions, walks, and celebrations (especially the Christmas party!). Some of my favorite memories are riding the bus together to grab lunch near the hospital. Kristen recognizes our strengths and encourages us to grow—she’s even helped me lean into my pediatric expertise, which is giving me the opportunity to support a simulation in other hospitals. Her belief in me, even when I struggle to believe in myself, inspires me to succeed and make a difference. Kristen is not just a phenomenal leader—she’s a wonderful person and friend, and I know our whole education team feels the same. We love our fearless leader!"
THANK YOU, Kristen, for ensuring our caregivers and patients are well taken care of. We appreciate you and we are lucky to have you on our team!

There’s no better time to celebrate our most recent L.O.V.E. – Daisy award winner than during this month of hearts and love! Jens Opheikens, RN, was recently celebrated for showing exception care to a patient and their family during some tender days in the ICU. Not only did Jens honor our Intermountain value of proving excellent clinical care, he put people first. Each time he entered this patient room Jens showed his heart as he did small acts of kindness.
The family noted in their nomination that, “Jens answered all of our questions with such knowledge and confidence and brought the doctor to the bedside anytime we had a concern. Jens showed such care and compassion in everything he did.”
During the patients’ stay, the loved ones felt cared for as well as Jens always asked if he could get them drinks or anything else to provide for their comfort. He was tender as he never missed a chance to fix the patient’s hair and get it out of their face. The sister shared, “His actions were little but mighty in our eyes – we cannot express the amount of gratitude we feel towards him.”
Jens also showed his heart to the family as he offered to read a letter out loud, that was written by a family member to the patient. The family didn’t feel they could do it with a steady voice, so Jens did it on their behalf. “We all felt his emotions coming through as he read the letter and that just showed me how caring and empathetic he is,” shared the sister.
Congratulations to Jens for this well-deserved honor for Living Our Values Every day (L.O.V.E.) and to all the incredibly dedicated caregivers at McKay-Dee Hospital who share their heart and skill with our patients and visitors each day!

For more than 100 years, McKay-Dee Hospital has grown from a small community hospital into a world-class, full-service regional facility, offering specialized services to a growing and dynamic population. The hours spent, the lives dedicated, and all that has been invested has truly made McKay-Dee Hospital a model healthcare facility as envisioned by its founders. McKay-Dee Hospital is part of Intermountain Healthcare's nationally recognized system of hospitals. When you choose McKay-Dee Hospital you have access to a full range of medical services, including cancer care, heart care, and more.
In the early years, the hospital encountered financial difficulties and needed community support to continue. In 1915, unable to meet costs, the LDS Church took over operations. Thanks to Elder David O. McKay and other church leaders, an agreement was made to transition the hospital to church ownership. In 1974, Intermountain Healthcare was formed to operate the $60-million chain of 15 hospitals owned by the LDS church as a not-for-profit corporation. This was the start of Intermountain Healthcare’s nationally recognized system. McKay-Dee is the only hospital in the Intermountain Healthcare system with family names.
As a not-for-profit hospital, caring for people in need—regardless of their ability to pay—is central to McKay-Dee Hospital’s mission. Each year the Hospital provides charity care to many patients who otherwise could not afford care. McKay-Dee Hospital is committed to bettering the community through partnerships and programs that bring healthcare services to those who many not otherwise have access to the care they need.
Looking to the future, McKay-Dee continues to build on the traditions of the Dee family and Annie Taylor Dee’s vision. That vision — becoming a model healthcare system and providing healing for life at an affordable cost — continues to drive a promising future that benefits not only patients and staff, but the entire community.
McKay-Dee Hospital is dedicated to providing high-quality care to patients, from preventive care to medical interventions and emergency care to help you live the healthiest life possible.
