Results of our "YOGA VS OSTEOPOROSIS" study so far for the spine and the femur.These are the numbers for the first 30 people to complete the study. In the two years before doing yoga, the group was losing bone in both the spine and the femur. (Left-sided dot for each line.) Two years later, both bones were gaining in their bone mineral density.(Right-sided dot of each line.) But we're hoping to see more!

Q: If you have kyphosis, does that mean you're getting osteoporosis?

A: No, it's the other way round, and a little more around than that. It starts with the osteoporosis: If you have osteoporosis, then you might get a vertebral fracture, which always occurs in the front of the vertebral body. This tilts the front of the vertebra down (it's also called a wedge fracture), and that can give you a case of kyphosis. But there is some truth even in the question, in that once your back is kyphotic, i.e., curved forward, then there is more pressure on those vertebral bodies, and the likelihood of a second fracture is quit high. Further, should you have two fractures, and have your spine tilted even more forward, the odds rise even higher for a third fracture.

So stand up straight.
